Webinar Discusses Financial Controls for Churches

The Insurance Board (IB) will offer a webinar, “Building Trust, Preventing Disaster—Financial Controls & Other Insights,” on Wednesday, January 22, at 6 a.m. and repeated at 10 a.m. (Hawai'i time).  The webinar will include basic principles of financial controls, including separation of duties and audit.  This webinar is especially valuable for newly elected church leaders.  Visit the IB website to register and to see a list of upcoming webinar topics.
 

Clergy Gather in Early Spring

The 2014 Hawai'i Conference Clergy Retreat will be held Monday, March 31, to Wednesday, April 2, at Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona on Hawai'i Island. Details and registration information will be available soon.
 

UCC History and Polity Offered Online

UCC History and Polity will be offered online by the Center for Progressive Renewal from January 24 to April 30, 2014.  Leading the course is Timothy Downs, former Conference Minister of the Southeast Conference.  Cost for the 12-week course is $629.
 

California Church Offers Summer Work for Students

Montebello Plymouth Congregational Church in Southern California invites college and/or seminary students to apply for its 2014 Summer Exploration program, teaching and leading children from preschool through eighth grade.  The program runs from June 14 to July 27, 2014. O'ahu Church Holds Garage Sale

Community Church of Honolulu (2345 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu) will host a church garage sale on Saturday, January 18, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Proceeds will support the church’s 2014 youth summer mission trip to Albany, New York.  For more information contact Manu Naeole at Manu@cchonolulu.org or 808-595-7541.
 

Church to Honor Minister As Peacemaker

Church of the Crossroads will honor Sam Cox, retired United Methodist minister and former Executive Director of Hale Kipa, with the Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker Award.  The award will be presented on Monday, January 20, 7 p.m., at Church of the Crossroads (1212 University Avenue, Honolulu). Crossroads Presents Film and Panel on Environment

The movie “The Sacred Place Where Life Begins: Gwich’in Women Speak” will be screened, and a panel discussion on environmental issues will follow, at Church of the Crossroads (1212 University Avenue, Honolulu) on Thursday, January 23, 5:30 to 9 p.m.  Panelists will include Alaskan indigenous leaders. 
 

Taizé Service Highlights Christian Unity

As part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Honolulu Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church invites all to a Taizé service of sacred music, scripture and prayer on Friday, January 24, 7 p.m., at the Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish on the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus.  Clergy are invited to wear clerical vestments from their own traditions. 
 

O'ahu Association Offers Polity Course

The O'ahu Association offers a five-course series on UCC polity and history intended for those seeking UCC ministerial standing.  The next session, “Ethos of the UCC and HCUCC,” will be held at Kailua Christian Church (317 Manono Street, Kailua) on Saturday, January 25, from 9 a.m. to noon.  There is no cost, but reservations are required.  Contact Kyle Lovett at revkyle@hawaiiantel.net by January 22 if you plan to attend or need more information.
 

See How Visual Arts Enhance Worship 

Brenda Grauer, a UCC minister from Ohio, will lead a session on how visual arts can enhance worship settings.  The consultation session will be held on January 25, beginning at 9 a.m., at Windward UCC (38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kailua) and will include an option to visit worship spaces in other UCC churches.  To reserve your place for all or part of the day-long session, contact Lucinda Keller at windwarducc@hawaii.rr.com or Jayne Ryan Kuroiwa at windwardpastor@hawaii.rr.com, or call the church at 254-3802. 
 

Pastor Keynotes Britt Lectures

The Annual Britt Lectures of the Hawaii District of the United Methodist Church features speakers on theology and faith-related topics.  This year’s lecturer is Methodist minister, Mike Slaughter, author of Change the World and Christmas Is Not Your Birthday.  The lectures will take place February 14, 15, and 16, beginning at 7 p.m. each day, at First United Methodist Church (1020 S. Beretania Street, Honolulu).  There will also be a workshop for clergy on Monday, February 17, 9 a.m., at the church.

Pastoral Changes

  • Nofotolu Alo began as Interim Minster of Trinity Samoan Church on January 5.
  • Mary Olney-Lloyd will serve as Interim Minister of Church of the Holy Cross starting January 15.  She most recently served as Pastor of Lake City Christian Church in Seattle.
