United Church Funds to Offer Fossil Fuel-Free Fund

In response to the General Synod resolution calling for lessening dependence on fossil fuels, United Church Funds will launch a fossil fuel-free investment fund. The Beyond Fossil Fuels Fund, open to churches and other UCC entities, will not include any investments in U.S. companies that extract or produce fossil fuels.
 

UCC General Minister Visits Hawai'i

Geoffrey Black, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, and Karen Georgia Thompson, UCC Ecumenical Officer, will visit Hawai'i later this month. A clergy gathering to talk story with the Revs. Black and Thompson will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Hawai'i Conference Office. New Youth Event Pictures Posted on Website

Nineteen youth and ten adults from Hawai'i returned last week from the Western Regional Youth Event, which was held June 29-July 3 in Seattle, Washington. Check out new photos from this event posted on our website.
 

Hawai'i Conference Receives Grant for Youth

Hawai'i Conference has received a $20,000 grant from G.N. Wilcox Trust in support of the Conference’s Fall Youth Camp, to be held October 5-8 at Camp Erdman, and the 2015 'Aha Pae'aina Youth Event.  More information about the youth camp will be available soon.
 

Plan for 2016 National Youth Event

O'ahu churches interested in sending youth to the next UCC National Youth Event, “BELIEVE,” in July 2016, are invited to a meeting to discuss funding and planning ideas.  The meeting will be held on August 27, 5 p.m., in the Conference Office.  Please contact Scott Davis by email at sdavis@hcucc.org or by phone at 808-791-5636 by August 20 if you will be attending.

Association Will Convene Ecclesicastical Council for Cindy Au

The O'ahu Association will convene an ecclesiastical council on Sunday, July 20, 4 p.m., at UCC-Judd Street (467 North Judd Street, Honolulu), for the purpose of examining Cindy Au for ordination.  To ensure quorum, O'ahu churches are asked to indicate their attendance to Donald Schmidt at dschmidt@hcucc.org or 808-791-5643.  Click HERE for more information and to download her ordination paper.
 

O'ahu Association Offers Polity Course

The O'ahu Association offers a series of courses on UCC polity and history for those seeking UCC ministerial standing.  The next session, “History of the UCC,” will be held at the Hawai'i Conference Office on Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to noon.  Lay members and authorized ministers are welcome to audit the series.  Courses are free, but contact Donald Schmidt at dschmidt@hcucc.org if you plan to attend.
 

Transition House Plans November Fundraiser

UCC Transition House has scheduled its next annual fundraiser for Thursday, November 6, 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Makiki Christian Church (829 Pensacola Street, Honolulu).  More information is forthcoming.

In Memory: Charles Schuetz

Retired minister Charles (Chuck) Schuetz died June 24 at the age of 92.  The Rev. Schuetz was ordained in 1967 and was minister of Kailua Christian Church until the early 1970s.  Private family services will be held later in the year.  Memorial gifts may be sent to Kailua Christian Church, 317 Manono Street, Kailua, HI  96734.
 

Pastoral Changes

James Fung retired as Pastor of Lihue Christian Church.  His last Sunday was July 6. He and his wife, Faith, will be moving to North Carolina to be closer to family.

Pearl City Community Church is looking for a piano accompanist for Sunday services, choir rehearsals and church events. This six-hour per week position, supervised by the choir director, begins August 2014.  Proficiency in a broad range of church music is required.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
