Maui Community Discusses Women Transitioning from Prison

Find out how to support women transitioning from prison at a Maui gathering on Thursday, July 24, 9-11 a.m., at St. Theresa Church (25 West Lipoa Street, Kihei).  “Women Supporting Women," sponsored in part by Pu'a Foundation, seeks to lower recidivism rates in the prison system and to create networks of support for women returning to their Maui homes.

Stories of Kalaupapa Ancestors Come to Life

“The Restoration of Family Ties” project of Ka 'Ohana O Kalaupapa helps families learn more about ancestors or loved ones sent to Kalaupapa.  Valerie Monson will share some of these stories in an illustrated lecture on Thursday, July 24, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Native Books/Na Mea Hawai'i (Ward Warehouse, 1050 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu).

Ko'olau Huiia Hosts Christian Endeavor Youth Camp

Ko'olau Huiia Protestant Church will sponsor the Christian Endeavor Aha Opio youth camp on Kaua'i from August 14 to 17.  This camp, for teens in grades 6 through 12, will be held at Kumu Camp in Anahola.  For additional information and to register, visit the Christian Endeavor website.

In Memory:  Sadaichi Asai

Pastor Emeritus Sadaichi Asai died July 4 at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California, at the age of 99.  The Rev. Asai was ordained in 1948 and served churches in Vermont, Kansas and Hawai'i, including Kahului Union Church, from which he retired in 1976.  Announcement of memorial service is pending.
 

Kaua'i Will Install Koloa Minister

The Kaua'i Association will hold a Service of Installation for Alan Akana, Pastor of Koloa Union Church, on July 27, 4 p.m., at the church (3289 Poipu Rd, Koloa).
 

Pastoral Changes

  • Kyle Lovett and Church of the Crossroads mutually agreed to part company as pastor and congregation.  Her last Sunday as pastor was July 13.
  • Deborah Whisnand resigned as Executive Director of Pacific Health Ministry effective July 11. She will be moving to Texas to be closer to family.
