Register for the HCUCC Clergy Retreat

The deadline to register for the Hawai'i Island-sponsored Clergy Retreat for all HCUCC pastors is February 3. The retreat will be held March 5-7, at the Sheraton Keauhou Hotel in Kailua-Kona. The theme this year is “Pastoral and Spiritual Care,” and keynote speaker will be Al Miles, Queen’s Medical Center Chaplain, counselor and author. Click HERE for more information.   It’s UCC Yearbook Time!

It’s that time of year again to fill out UCC Yearbook forms, which have just been mailed to churches. Instructions and details regarding the forms are included in the mailing. As an incentive, churches that submit completed forms by the February 24 deadline will be eligible to win one of five gift certificates. So be sure to return those forms on time!

  Ecumenical Service for Christian Unity

The annual ecumenical service observing the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be held Tuesday, January 24, 7 p.m., at Christ United Methodist Church (1639 Keeaumoku Street, Honolulu). Roman Catholic Bishop Larry Silva will share the message. Click HERE for more.

  Nancy Aleck to Be Honored as Peacemaker

Church of the Crossroads announces that Nancy Aleck, Executive Director of the Hawai'i People’s Fund, is the recipient of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker Award. A celebration of her work will be held on Monday, January 16, 7:00 p.m., at Church of the Crossroads. Nancy has been an advocate for peace and justice since she became a Hawai'i resident in 1973.   Annual Event Recalls UCC Apology to Na Kanaka Maoli

Now in its nineteenth year, the Annual Hookuikahi Reconciliation Event will commemorate Queen Lili'uokalani and recall the United Church of Christ’s formal apology in 1993 to the Hawaiian people by then UCC President Paul Sherry. The event, sponsored by the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center (PJRC), will be held at St. Augustine’s Church in Waikiki on Tuesday, January 17, at 6:00 p.m.  PJRC is also coordinating the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade from Magic Island to Kapiolani Park on Monday, January 16, at 9:00 a.m.  Click HERE for additional information about both of these events.

  Clergy Outreach Workshop at Tripler

Tripler Army Medical Center will conduct a free workshop, “Pastoral Care Training for Clergy on the Care and Healing of Wounded Warriors and Families,” on Tuesday, February 7, beginning at 8:45 a.m. The workshop will conclude with lunch.   Memorial Service for Lawrence Zdvoracek

A memorial service for retired minister Lawrence Zdvoracek will be held on Monday, January 16, 2012, at Kailua Christian Church (317 Manono Street) in Kailua, O'ahu. Visitation begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the service at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Zdvoracek, 91, died at his home in Kaneohe on December 17.

  Memorial Service for Harold Teves

Service for Harold Teves, Pastor of Kahuku Congregational Church in Ocean View (Hawai'i Island), will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Puka'ana Congregational Church in Kealia. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by the service at 10:00 a.m.

  New Interim Minister at Central Union Church

David Hirano has been called to serve as Interim Minister at Central Union Church. David, currently Interim Minister of Pearl City Community Church, will finish on January 31 and begin serving at Central Union Church on February 1.

Emmet White, CEO of Arcadia and Craigside retirement communities, was recently interviewed for a Hawaii Business Magazine segment, “Founders & Visionaries,” on retirement and long-term care in Hawai'i. Click HERE to watch the interview.
