'Aha Pae'aina Meets this Week

The 190th 'Aha Pae'aina of the Hawai'i Conference United Church of Christ meets this week beginning today with the 'Aha Iki, the meeting of Hawaiian churches, at Kawaiaha'o Church.  The 'Aha Makua for all churches and ministers will be hosted on Friday and Saturday by Kanana Fou Church.  The Conference Office will remain open through Friday afternoon with reduced staff.

Office Closed June 11, No Coconut Wireless June 13

The Hawai'i Conference Office will be closed on Monday, June 11, in observance of Kamehameha Day, and will reopen on Tuesday, June 12. Due to the upcoming 'Aha Pae'aina and the holiday, the Coconut Wireless will take a break next Wednesday and return to your inbox on June 20.

Correction: Medical/Dental Open Enrollment

The open enrollment period for church employees on the Hawai'i Conference health plan runs until June 28 (an incorrect date appeared in last week’s Coconut Wireless). Also, the information sheet mailed to churches last week contained an incorrect premium figure. Click HERE to view the updated information sheet.

Sewing Supplies Needed

The Woman’s Board of Missions for the Pacific Islands is partnering with Kokokahi UCC’s Tropical Hunger Mission Project to support a sewing project in Upper Kamis, a remote area in Midanao, Philippines. Donated sewing supplies are needed for this project and will be shipped at the end of July. For information on how to donate and for a list of specific supplies needed, click HERE.


  Know Your Rights Workshops

Workshops on employment rights for Micronesian and Hispanic workers will be offered, separately, to employees and employers throughout this month.  Workshops for employees are sponsored by the Hawai'i Coalition for Immigration Reform (a program of Faith Action for Community Equity), and will take place as follows:
 · June 16, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Susannah Wesley Community Center (Kalihi, O'ahu)
 · June 18, 1:30-3:30 p.m., County Office of Aging Hilo Conference Room (Hilo, Hawai'i)
 · June 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Christ the King Catholic Church (Kahului, Maui)   
Employers workshops will be hosted by the Hawaii Employers Council on these dates:

O'ahu Association Offers Polity Course

The O'ahu Association will offer a series of classes on UCC polity and history for pastors seeking standing in the United Church of Christ.  The first class in this series, “History, Theology, and Polity of the UCC,” will be held at the Conference Office on Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. until noon.  If you are interested in attending or want more information, contact Kyle Lovett, Pastor of Church of the Crossroads, by email at revkyle@hawaii.rr.com.  Details and information on the other four sessions of the course, to be offered over the next twelve months, will be announced soon.

Church Announces Date of 'Aha Papa Himeni o Hawai'i

Kaumakapili Church will host the 'Aha Papa Himeni o Hawai'i from August 17 to 19. This is an opportunity for Hawaiian Churches to reinforce the importance of continuing the tradition of singing Hawaiian choral music through the singing of Hawaiian anthems. Registration information and details of this event will be posted when available.


Retired Minister Fills in at Waiokeola

Edward “Ted” Robinson, Pastor Emeritus of Central Union Church, will serve as supply pastor at Waiokeola Church from June 15 to September 23 while the church’s pastor, Chris Eng, is on sabbatical.


UCC National Offices Announces Opening
