Conference Office Closes at Year End

The Hawai'i Conference Office will close at noon on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, and re-open at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 4, 2016.  There will be no Coconut Wireless on December 30.  The Coconut Wireless will return to your inbox on January 6.  In case of emergency or urgent need, you can either leave a message on the Conference Office main line (808-537-9516) or call any of the following:

 January 11 is Deadline for Offerings

Contributions to Our Church’s Wider Mission and UCC special offerings should be remitted to the Hawai'i Conference by Monday, January 11, 2016, to be counted as 2015 contributions and toward Five for Five tallies.  For questions, contact Ann Hiyane at 808-791-5628 or ahiyane@hcucc.org.
 

 Kalaupapa Sunday Honors Exiled Patients

The fourth Sunday in January has been designated by the Hawai'i Conference as Kalaupapa Sunday, a day to remember and honor those who were exiled to the remote peninsula on Moloka'i because of Hansen’s Disease. Resources for observing Kalaupapa Sunday, which falls on January 24, 2016, can be found on the Conference website.
 

 CPE Program Opens on Maui

Pacific Health Ministry will begin a new Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at Maui Memorial Hospital beginning March 2016.  This six-month, extended unit intensive course of study includes at least 300 clinical hours in the hospital.  For more information and to apply, go to the PHM website and look under the “Extended CPE Unit” heading. 
 

 Polity Conference Invites Proposals for Papers

“Mission, Church Polity, and the (Dis)Unity of the Church” is an international conference exploring and developing a theological understanding of church polity.  The conference will take place April 18-20, 2016, at Princeton Theological Seminary.  Organizers are inviting proposals for papers to be presented at the conference.  Deadline for proposals is January 15, 2016.
 

 Nominate Leaders in Mental Health

Mental Health America of Hawai'i invites nominations of outstanding persons and agencies that have dedicated themselves to promoting mental wellness and improving mental health care through positive and innovative programs and leadership.  Awardees will be recognized on May 17, 2016, at the 11th Annual Mental Health Mahalo Awards.  Deadline to submit a nomination is February 5. 
 

EVENTS

 Churches Observe Christmas

Many of our churches will hold Christmas Eve or Christmas Day services, including these:
  • Nu'uanu Congregational Church (2651 Pali Highway, Honolulu) hosts its annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on December 24 at 7 p.m.
  • A Christmas Candle Light and Musical Christmas Eve service will be held at Ka Hana O Ke Akua (86-311 Lualualei Homestead Road, Waianae) at 7 p.m.
  • Christmas Eve Candle Light Service begins at 7 p.m. at Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church (3815 Hanapepe Road, Hanapepe) with refreshments and fellowship to follow.

 Community Invited to Christian Unity Service

As part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Hawai'i Council of Churches and the Honolulu Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church invite all to a Taizé service of sacred music, scripture and prayer on Thursday, January 21, 2016, 7 p.m., at the Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish on the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus. Clergy are invited to wear clerical vestments from their own traditions.
 

 O'ahu Association Installs Central Union Associate

The O'ahu Association will install Brandon Duran as Associate Minister of Central Union Church (1660 Beretania Street, Honolulu) on Sunday, February 7, 2016, 4 p.m.
