Conference Office Announces Holiday Schedule

The Hawai'i Conference Office will close at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, and re-open at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015. There will be no issues of the Coconut Wireless on December 24 and December 31. The Coconut Wireless will return to your inbox on January 7. Have a merry Christmas and a joy-filled new year!
 

UCC Supports Philippines after Typhoon

After the second major typhoon in 13 months to hit the Philippines, UCC Disaster Ministries has already provided $20,000 for emergency relief.  To support ongoing efforts to help survivors and families that have suffered great loss, make a donation to the International Emergency Relief fund.  For updates about the UCC response to Typhoon Hagupit, click HERE.

January 9 is Deadline for Offerings

Church in Pohnpei Seeks Used Chairs

Ohwa Church in Pohnpei, a member of the United Church of Christ in Pohnpei, a partner denomination of the UCC, is seeking the donation of 100 chairs for use in its sanctuary.  The church will arrange for shipping.  If you can help, or for more information, contact Lee Henry-Chang at leehenrychang@hcucc.org.

Ola'a Hosts Hebedoma

Churches Observe Week of Christian Unity

As part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Hawai'i Council of Churches and the Honolulu Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church invite all to a Taizé service of sacred music, scripture and prayer on Thursday, January 22, 7:30 p.m., at the Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish on the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus.  Clergy are invited to wear clerical vestments from their own traditions.
 

O'ahu Association Installs Two Ministers in January

The O'ahu Association will hold two services of installation in January:
  • Jun Lagon as Pastor of Filipino United Church of Christ (94-1366 Hiapo Street, Waipahu) on Sunday, January 25, 2015, 3 p.m.
  • David Rivers as Senior Minister of Central Union Church (1660 Beretania Street, Honolulu) on Saturday, January 31, 2015, 4 p.m.

Plan Now for Kalaupapa Sunday

The fourth Sunday in January has been designated by the Hawai'i Conference as Kalaupapa Sunday, a day to remember and honor those who were exiled to the remote peninsula on Moloka'i because of Hansen’s Disease.  Resources for observing Kalaupapa Sunday, which falls on January 25, 2015, can be found on the Conference website.
 

Helping Professions Gather to Address Needs of Veterans

Chaplains, clinicians, theologians, pastors and others are invited to "Moral Injury and Soul Repair," a conference addressing the spiritual, moral and emotional needs of military personnel and veterans.  The conference will be held January 29-30, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in San Diego, California.  For information and registration, click HERE.
 

AHEC Holds Spring 'Aha Halawai

The Spring 'Aha Halawai of the Association of Hawaiian Evangelical Churches will be held February 20-21 at Waiola Church (535 Wainee Street, Lahaina, Maui).  Click HERE for the registration packet.  To register online, click HERE.  Registration deadline is January 12.
 

Register for Church Leaders Event

Information and registration will be mailed next week to churches for the Church Leaders Event, which takes place on Saturday, February 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Nu'uanu Congregational Church (2651 Pali Highway, Honolulu). Cost is $25 for O'ahu attendees and $85 for Neighbor Island attendees (includes airfare).

Pastoral Changes

Ruth Farrell resigned as Chaplain of Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i Campus. Her last day will be December 19.  Beginning in January, she will be an interim minister at a church in Pennsylvania.
 

Kupuna Shares Oral History on Olelo

Minerva Pang, member of Pearl City Community Church, is among the kupuna interviewed by Jo-An Goss, member of Kaumakapili Church, as part of an oral history video series.  The first part of Minerva’s story was broadcast earlier this year, and the second part will air on Olelo Channel 53 in December and January.
