NIN Grant Deadline Approaches

UCC Justice and Witness Ministries awards Neighbors in Need (NIN) grants to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities, including direct services, community organizing, advocacy and addressing systemic injustice. Funding is provided through the annual Neighbors in Need offering.  The fall application deadline is September 30.

Work Groups Invited to Rebuild after Sandy

The UCC invites volunteer work groups to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy last October.  Work groups are needed in Bergen County (Moonachie and Little Ferry), New Jersey.

Give Aloha in September

During the month of September, you can donate up to $249 to each non-profit organization participating in Foodland’s Give Aloha campaign.  Foodland will then pass on your gift to the organization along with an additional donation.  Listed below are donation numbers for UCC churches and affiliates participating in this year’s Give Aloha program:

Kailua Church Offers Benches

Program Teaches Hospital Visitation Skills

Pacific Health Ministries (PHM) will offer Extended Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for laypersons and clergy interested in continuing education.  The part-time CPE program, which runs from November 12 to April 29, is intended for working adults who would like to learn hospital visitation skills.  More information is available on the PHM website. Application deadline is September 25.


First Chinese Hosts Hip-Hop Concert

First Chinese Church of Christ (1054 South King Street, Honolulu) will host a free concert featuring hip-hop storyteller Jason Chu this Friday, September 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. Jason, a student at Fuller Theological Seminary, is currently Visiting Associate at Church of the Holy Cross (Hilo).

Ewa Church Holds Fall Fair

Ewa Community Church (91-1258 Renton Road, Ewa Beach) will hold its Best Fall Fair on Saturday, September 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring food, plants, crafts and silent auction.  Also, Norman Osumi, son of the late Paul Osumi, a UCC minister, will sign copies of his book Today’s Thought: Rev. Paul Osumi: the Man and his Message.

Webinars Equip Churches for Stewardship

Two, free UCC-sponsored webinars will help churches with stewardship ministries: 
  • On Tuesday, September 24, 1 p.m. (HST), “Surprising Gifts” will suggest best practices in stewardship and offer helpful ways to use the 2013 UCC stewardship theme materials.
  • On Wednesday, September 25, 9 a.m. (HST), “UCC e-Giving” will demonstrate how churches benefit by offering electronic giving, an affordable option for any size church.

In Memory: Dee McNabb-Wang

Retired minister Doris Jean “Dee” McNabb-Wang died September 16 at the age of 88.  Ordained in 1998, Dee served at Pu'ula UCC, Central Christian Church, First United Protestant Church, and United Community Church.  Private service will be held.  Condolences may be sent to her daughter-in-law, Marjorie Matsushita, 2255 Hulali Place, Honolulu, HI  96819.
