SDWG Activates for
Missing Person Search

South DakotaTimber Lake Wing was activated Tuesday evening to assist the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Police with a missing person search.  

CAP’s involvement was planned for Wednesday. Local authorities overnight and found the missing woman deceased near Timber Lake, SD. (Read More)

SDWG Hosts NCR Honor Academy

Nearly 70 Civil Air Patrol Cadet Honor AcademyCadets and Senior Members from the Upper Midwest and the Central Plains meet in Sioux Falls this weekend for the North Central Region Cadet Honor Academy. 

The Cadet Honor Academy prepares cadets to serve on color guards while furthering their individual character development and drug-free knowledge. Cadet Honor Academies are held by CAP Regions across the United States. (Read More)


SDWG Flies Low Level Route Survey
for Ellsworth AFB

A South Dakota WinLow level routeg aircrew performed a Low Level Route Survey for the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB this month.

“These surveys for the Air Force use the visual scanning skills CAP members also use for missing person searches and other air-to-ground observation,” said aircrew member Col. Mike Beason.

Filler Supports
Surrogate Predator Training

Maj. E.W. Filler, of Big Sioux Composite Squadron, spent two weeks at CAP Green FlagNellis AFB in Nevada this month, helping active-duty Air Force personnel train for use of remote sensing drones.

Green Flag is a joint Air Force – Civil Air Patrol program designed to train Joint Tactical Air Controllers (JTAC).  Flying at altitudes of 13,000 to 17,000 feet, CAP provides real-time video images of a simulated battlefield. (Read More)

Epp Receives National Award 

Lt. Col. Todd Epp received an Award of Excellence for his story and resulting media coverage on 1st Lt. Travis Robinson--who has been in a wheelchair since high school--taking command of the Sioux Falls Composite Squadron in 2021. (Read More)

Units Earn
Quality Cadet Squadron Awards

National Headquarters has announced that five South Dakota Wing Quality Cadet Unit Awardunits are receiving the Quality Cadet Squadron Award for 2022.

“This is the best showing we have had in many years,” said Lt. Col. Linda Buechler, CAP’s director of cadets for South Dakota Wing.

The five units, in order of charter number, are Lincoln County, Rushmore, Sioux Falls, Big Sioux, and Lookout Mountain. (Read More)

Members who complete Professional Development BadgePart 1 of Level 2, and have been a member for six months, are eligible for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant. The member then continues with the Learning Phase by building on what they have already learned in Level 2, Part 2. (Read More)
