Our Beginnings - New Manager - Photo Comp - BioBlitz
Dear Subscribers

Thank you for signing up to our Newsletter - we're pleased to be sending out our first one.  Format and frequency are not fully fixed yet, but please do get in touch with ideas at info@wildaboutbath.org.  If you only have time for a quick read, please scroll down to our Upcoming Events section to find out what's happening in the next week or so.

Our Beginnings

Wild about Bath was formed to help people in the Southstoke, Combe Down and Monkton Combe area Enjoy Nature, Conserve Wildlife and Build Community. We encourage our members to enjoy Nature through walks, talks and outdoor events and to generally spend time watching, listening and going a bit slower in our natural surroundings. We have been amazed by the participation in the Facebook group, which has been active since March 2021. It has enabled us to pool our sightings of various animals and plants that are intriguing and exquisite, despite being not very far from our front doors. Do add any photos or sightings of your own to enrich us all.

Gardening for Wildlife

The Wild about Bath website launched in mid August. Take a look at the Gardening for Wildlife page where you can assess your garden for features and practices that encourage wildlife to thrive, helping to conserve our natural biodiversity.  Have a go at the questionnaire and gain a certificate - Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. It really helps us if you complete the form as then we can say how many local residents are concerned to help nature thrive in our own backyards. It’s also helpful to gain an award at any level, especially if you then upgrade by making a few changes, as we can show that we are helping make change happen!

New Part-Time Manager

A big welcome to Jenny James, our new part time manager! Jenny will be keeping us all in order (tricky job), answering emails, posting items on the website, sending out newsletters (yes, like this one), organising events and much more.

Upcoming Events

BioBlitz

Stop press!
This Saturday, 25th September, 9.30 - 12.30,  we are holding a Garden BioBlitz in Combe Down. Click here to find out more. A BioBlitz is when several knowledgeable naturalists take a speedy look at one habitat and compile a list of all the species they can find in a limited period of time. You don't need to be an expert to join in - it’s also a great opportunity to meet some of the Wild about Bath team and have a cup of coffee in a lovely spacious garden. We will be able to encounter amphibians from the compost heap, dragonfly larvae from the pond, identify birds with help from an ornithologist and safely admire live moths attracted into a light trap overnight. Pop in for as long or as short a time as you want. Some special events are starting at 9:30 (Moth Trap Results), 10:30 (Coffee and Cake) and 11:00 (Pond Dipping).
There are a few spaces left, so contact us on info@wildaboutbath.org to confirm a place.

Wildlife Photography Competition

So many of you have been taking fantastic photos in the whole period since we started lockdown back in March 2020 that we thought it would be a great idea to celebrate what we have seen through a photo competition. Our first attempt was to have them as part of the Southstoke Fete, but this was cancelled due to Covid. So now they will be displayed at Holy Trinity Church Combe Down, as part of the harvest service and in the afternoon of Sunday 3rd October, when the prizes will be awarded. Closing date for entries is fast approaching - printed images need to be in by Friday 1st October. See full details on our website.

Past events

During the summer we have held various events from moth trapping  to bird song walks. Have a look to get a feel for them as we hope to repeat these and more next year.

Kids' Page

The best way to secure the future of the planet is through the next generation, so we hope to have events and regular blogs containing activities for your children, nieces and nephews or grandchildren. Our first kids' blog shows how to watch the transformation of large white caterpillars into adults. Let us know how you get on - preferably with some photos! You can email us at info@wildaboutbath.org or get a post onto our Facebook page.

Associated Organisations

Nature chain (https://www.naturechain.co.uk) is an organisation similar to Wild about Bath which has a wildlife garden scheme, events and a newsletter and serves Limpley Stoke and Freshford. If you live in those areas we encourage you to join their scheme. Even if you don’t it may be worth signing up for their newsletter as they in particular have had some very good Zoom talks and have more lined up.
