New Year - New Chapter!

2021: A New Chapter

Hello friends,

Happy New Year! Hope you managed to get a break over Christmas. This has been a tough time for a lot of us, and I'm sure, like me, you're very glad to see the back of 2020. Let's hope 2021 brings a new chapter, a fresh page, and improved lives for all of us.

This first newsletter of the year includes details of:

...and more.

New Year is a time for making plans and thinking ahead. If your ambition is to get your book published, you need to finish it - and find an agent or publisher who believes in it. As I write this, I'm listening to the bestselling author David Mitchell on Desert Island Discs saying that his best piece of advice to aspiring authors is to "just finish something" - even if it's not very good - you can then start improving it.

He also talks about how he submitted his first book to 20 agents and publishers, while living in Japan. He got his mum to send him a copy of The Writers & Artists Yearbook from the UK to find their contact details. He got four rejections - but an invitation from one agent at Curtis Brown to meet up when he was next in London - which led to his next book being published.

These two steps are essential if you want to be a traditionally published author: finish something, and get someone interested in publishing it. And our next two masterclasses will help you do just that. You can join us from anywhere in the world - and if you miss them, there will be a video replay available to participants and Patrons.

Social Media Services for Publishers

Are you a publisher? Are you looking for some help with your social media strategy or content? I've provided social media services to publishers for years - including social media audits and strategy, content creation and training. Although the training side of things has been curtailed by COVID, I still managed some 'in-house' training in 2020 - by doing it online!

I'm currently taking on a few new clients. So if you could use some help, here's a list of the 10 social media services I offer - along with some recent reviews from clients - including these nice words from Penguin Books:

"Jon Reed is brilliant to work with. We publish a New York Times Bestselling author who did not have an online presence and Jon helped grow his Instagram account by 10,000 followers in the space of 12 months. Creating authentic, engaging and impactful content, Jon also developed a very strong, trustworthy relationship with the author who equally hugely appreciated his great work. Jon is extremely reliable, strategic and creative, I would thoroughly recommend him."
Julia Murday, Associate Communications Director, Penguin Books

Tip of the Week: Write Something Every Day

Victoria Wood biography by Jasper ReesIt's mostly Victoria Wood who's got me through Christmas. And, indeed, through life. I've been a huge fan since the early 80s.

I got her official biography, Let's Do It by Jasper Rees, for Christmas. Among other things, it's wonderful reminder of her talent, productivity and work ethic.

It's also a sobering reminder of all the projects that don't get made - and an encouragement to stick with it despite setbacks, develop resilience, hone your craft and share your talent with the world.

There was also plenty of Victoria Wood on the telly, including a new two-part compilation of her favourite sketches called Victoria Wood: The Secret List.

As well as her favourite sketches, songs and routines, this included extracts of interviews with Victoria Wood over the years. One thing she said stuck with me. A piece of advice she said she always gives to aspiring writers: write something every day. It doesn't have to be any good - you'll get better. Just write something.

What will you write today?
