Celebrating 50 Years of Broadcasting from Monaco

Fifty years ago this week, TWR aired its first program from a 100,000-watt shortwave transmitter in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The transmitter was housed in a building ordered built by Adolf Hitler during World War II to broadcast Nazi propaganda. Never used for its original purpose, TWR now utilizes the facility to transmit the Good News of Jesus Christ to millions of listeners daily throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Today, programs from Monte Carlo are aired in 16 languages, including Arabic, English, French, Hungarian, Kabyle, Romanian and Tamazight, among others. Broadcasts originally began airing on October 16, 1960, from one shortwave transmitter, but now programming is beamed from multiple shortwave and high-powered AM facilities.

“Sometimes God turns the efforts of evil men into vehicles for His work in the world,” says TWR President Lauren Libby. “God provided TWR a huge voice to speak in Jesus’ name at a strategic time in history. Today, TWR’s programs from Monte Carlo still bring hope and encouragement to millions.”

“TWR’s involvement in Monte Carlo is the story and evidence of a great God performing miracles through people considering the financing, the protection of the facility and the operation,” says Felix Widmer, TWR’s international director for Europe, CIS and the Middle East. “The reactions to the broadcasts continue to be the story of God speaking into lives of people, inviting them into a personal relationship with Him and in doing so changing them.”

TWR Gift Annuities

Did you know that a gift today can provide you with income for life and a charitable tax deduction while helping TWR in reaching the world for Christ by media in more than 200 languages and dialects?

The charitable gift annuity is an agreement between you and TWR. In exchange for transferring cash or securities to TWR, we will pay you income for your life. The rate of returns depends on your age – rates for single life agreements range from 4.8% (age 50) to 9.5% (age 90). Two life agreements are also available, but you must be at least 50 years old to participate.

If you would like to know more about this great opportunity to provide secure income while supporting the ministry of TWR, please e-mail us at info@twr.org (include your name, address, phone number and date of birth), or call 1-800-456-7897 and ask for the annuity department. We will be happy to provide a proposal for your specific situation.  The minimum investment is $5,000. (Please note that TWR is unable to issue charitable gift annuities in the states of New York, Washington and Hawaii.)

TWR Debuts New OneStory Website

TWR’s Strategic Initiatives & Partnerships recently developed a website on behalf of the OneStory partnership. This new site, www.onestory-media.org, made its “world premiere” at the recent International Orality Network (ION) annual conference. It was not only debuted as the OneStory site, but it also showcased the vision for what could be done to serve the larger storying movement, which encompasses Bible story sets in 150 languages developed by various organizations and partnerships over the last three decades.

This new site was met with great enthusiasm by the OneStory partners (Campus Crusade for Christ, Wycliffe/SIL, Youth With a Mission and TWR) as well as the ION attendees. “It is a bit of a departure from our normal focus in that this first site is English-driven providing access to Bible story sets and other content in 15 languages initially for missionaries, cross cultural and even near culture workers,” said U.S. Director of Strategic Initiatives & Partnerships Tom Watkins.

In the future, TWR hopes to add interfaces to the site through some other major missionary-sending languages, as well as to develop some “A-Z mother tongue” sites that would be appropriate according to the Internet usage and prevalence of various indigenous peoples.

A New Creation

Peer pressure can be a beautiful thing when you’re being pressured in the right direction. Yet, in the case of Madihah, a high school student in Eritrea, her friends were determined to see her waste her life. Their voices were loud and persuasive and they were pushing her deeper and deeper into immorality. As she accelerated downhill, she had no one to help her.

Amid the cacophony of voices, however, a true friend and peer recently appeared, introducing her to TWR’s radio ministry. She’s now listening regularly, and her life is changing. Through the broadcasts and God’s word, she is developing the strength and confidence to resist and even protest against her peer group.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Madihah has experienced this new life. “The lessons on the radio broadcasts are creating a new person inside of me – a new person with a new view of life and new way of thinking,” she says. “The merciful Lord has visited me in my troubles and tribulations, and is setting me free from sin and bad influences.”

Another soul has been redeemed by Jesus through the radio waves. Now Eritrea has one more voice that can call out in the darkness and lead others to the one who changes lives. That is exactly what Madihah intends to do. “I am determined to reach the ones who are suffering from the same problems I had experienced. The ministry has a lot to do: to save lives, to bring people out of the darkness and to set the youth free from immoral practices.”
