Pro Photo Tips Assignment #2!

Greetings my excellent friends and welcome to the second in a continuing series of photo assignments from Pro Photo Tips! Every other week I'll be sending out mini assignments just like this that deal with one or two important concepts in photography.

In a recent video on PPT I discussed how burning and dodging can be used to direct your viewers' attention in your photos. Our eyes are automatically attracted to bright spots in photos, and knowing this you can edit your photos to highlight the most important elements. In other words, if you make your important subjects brighter they will attract more attention.

For example, in the photo above I brightened the mountains in the middle and darkened the edges of the frame. This helps direct the viewer's eye exactly to the central peak.

So this week's assignment is to take a photo and burn and dodge it to more effectively control your viewers' attention. That can be as simple as adding a vignette, or as complex as isolating a specific element from its background. If you aren't sure how to burn and dodge, check out the complete tutorial down below.

Once you've completed the assignment please to share your before and after photos with the ProPhotoTips group on Facebook. Make sure to hashtag your photos with #BurnDodge so they're easy to find. Looking forward to seeing what you shoot!
