NEWS FROM GIRTON

Girton's Cultural Treats this Term

From a garden walk with a plant scientist, to a poetry evening (followed by Formal Hall), or concerts with award-winning musicians, there are a host of cultural treats to be enjoyed at Girton this term. All are welcome.

  • April 27th, 2.30pm: A piano recital by Mateusz Borowiak. Mateusz is a relatively recent Girton graduate who has gone on to spectacular achievements. His programme will include sonatas by Soler and Barber (op.26), extracts from Albéniz's Iberia and Bach-Busoni's Chaconne in D minor.
  • May 2nd, 11am: Girton Garden Spring Walk. A graduate plant scientist from Clare College will lead a spring walk exploring the gardens and their importance to Girton's past, present and future.
  • May 3rd, 8pm: Echoes of Venice Concert. A major Venetian extravagance in the Main Hall! The Cambridge University Chamber Choir will be joined by the Cambridge University Collegium Musicum and Historic Brass of the Combined Conservatoires to perform 40-part motets by Tallis and Striggio, as well as works by Gabrieli and others.
  • May 8th, 6pm: Poetry Evening and Formal Hall. In addition to the presentation of the 2014 Jane Martin Poetry Prize, the audience will be treated to a collection of poetry readings from the winners and the judges; John Fuller, Emeritus Professor at Magdalen College Oxford, and Vahni Capildeo, Trinidadian writer of poetry and prose. For those who wish to dine in College it is also possible to purchase Formal Hall tickets for that evening.
  • June 17th, 3.30pm: May Week Concert. With the repertoire ranging from Vivaldi (the A Minor Double Violin Concerto) to Shostakovich (the Concerto for Trumpet, Piano and Strings), and from Mozart to Gershwin this is sure to be an entertaining afternoon. Tickets can be purchased on the door.

For a full list of concerts at Girton this term please see the Music Society's Calendar (pdf).

The 2014 Telephone Campaign was our most successful yet with nearly £250,000 raised and a record 71% participation rate. Thank you to all those who chatted to one of our student callers and for your generous support.
Jointly organised with Camden Council, the new access scheme was launched in March when the College welcomed Camden Sixth Formers to two masterclass days as part of a programme to encourage ambition to attend high-achieving universities and support strong applications. The initiative complements Girton's involvelment in the HE+ scheme, now in its fourth year, where the College works with a consortium of schools in the Dudley area to similarly raise aspirations.
The Alumni vs Students football match took place in November 2013. The OGs triumphed with a final score of ‘3.5 to nil’.  For photos please visit the GASA Facebook page.
Alumni Accommodation Summer Discount. From 7th July 2014 until 18th September 2014 (inclusive) accommodation in College will be available to alumni at a discounted rate. Family and friends are welcome to join you too! See our website for details.
