Founders' Memorial Lecture
with Sir Paul Nurse

Science as Revolution
Friday, February 13th 2015

Science has brought about revolutionary changes in our understanding of ourselves and the natural world, which have acted as major drivers of our culture and civilisation. This scientific knowledge has in turn brought about revolutions in the ways that we live and in the technologies that support society. A case can be made that science is the most revolutionary activity of human-kind.

Paul Nurse is a geneticist and cell biologist who has worked on how the eukaryotic cell cycle is controlled and how cell shape and cell dimensions are determined. He is President of the Royal Society and Director of the Francis Crick Institute in London and has served as Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK and President of Rockefeller University. He shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and has received the Albert Lasker Award and the Royal Society's Royal and Copley Medals. He was knighted in 1999 and received the Legion d'honneur in 2003.

For further information about the Lecture please visit our website. Places are limited so please reserve your seat early.

Making a Difference:
Girtonian Authors

Currently over 200 Girtonians work in publishing and media, and even more past and present College members are novelists, poets or writers of non-fiction.

Girton is proudly connected to a talented pool of successful authors; from the well-loved British crime writer PD James, Honorary Fellow of the College, to Joseph O'Neil (1982), a former Law undergraduate whose third novel Neverland attracted the interest of Barack Obama; from acclaimed poets such as Gwyneth Lewis (1978) to novelists Hisham Matar and Emma Donoghue, who have both featured on the Man Booker Prize short-list.

To read more about these talented Girton authors and their thoughts on the College, or to view a list of alumni publications, visit our website.

The College is now recruiting student callers for the 2015 Telephone Campaign. The callers are hoping to emulate the success of last year's campaign which raised over £265,000 for the College thanks to the generosity of our alumni.

We would be incredibly grateful if you might be able to donate any exciting prizes or work experience opportunities for our student callers to enjoy at the end of the calling period. Please email if you are able to help!
133rd Varsity Rugby Match
Thursday, December 11th 2014 at 2.30pm

The 133rd annual Varsity Rugby Match at Twickenham will be kicking-off at the new time of 2.30pm.

Oxford needs one more win to make it five in a row and create a Dark Blue record for the fixture. Cambridge, however, still leads the series by 61 wins to 57 and will be doing everything possible to widen the margin further.

The traditional pre-Varsity Match clash of the respective Under 21 teams will still kick-off at 11.30am.

This year’s Match will be dedicated to the 27 Oxford Blues and 28 Cambridge Blues who lost their lives in the First World War.

For more information or to book tickets, please visit the Varsity Match website.
Our alumni are always very welcome to return to College. If you would like any information about using our facilities for an event, please visit the Conferences & Dining section of our website.
