BOCC Update for August 19 Meeting

As promised, the BOCC’s August 19th meeting was short in duration (3 hours). Below are some of the items on the agenda worth noting:
  • The Board approved an annual expenditure of $2,850 for four years from Douglas County’s share of the American Rescue Plan Act to identify areas in rural Nevada where access to the internet is nonexistent or lacking. Each of Nevada’s rural counties are participating in this program.
  • The Board unanimously voted to waive Community Development fees for individual homeowners who homes were lost or damaged during the Tamarack Fire.
And as a great lead in to my Small Business Saturday Video below, two presentations were given that can help small businesses in Douglas County:
  • Lucille Rao, Assistant Planner in Community Development, gave a presentation on the 2022 Federal Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. $3.3 million has been allocated to small businesses located in Nevada’s 15 rural counties who qualify for the program. There is a meeting open to the public at 2 PM at the Minden Inn  located at 1594 Esmeralda Avenue, Room 306.
  • Lisa Granahan, Economic Vitality Manager, gave a brief presentation on the Rural Business Assistance Program. Information on this program and how to participate is listed below:
    • Do you have a small business, startup, side gig, or an amazing idea? Would up to $25,000 in funding, business training, and support make a difference? Visit to determine your eligibility and apply by September 3, 2021.

Small Business Saturday

What started as a small business in a parking lot has grown into one of the largest construction and equipment rental small businesses in the country. This week, we highlight Ahern Rentals.

Don Ahern has a true success story - he built a company that provides thousands of good jobs in locations across Nevada and America, including right here in Douglas County.
If your business, or the business of someone you know, would like to be featured on my Small Business Saturdays series, please email me at

All the best,

Commissioner Danny Tarkanian

In order to better serve our community, I am sending out emails before and after each public meeting of the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), in order to educate the public of what the BOCC is doing. I strongly believe this is an essential communication that will ensure the public stays informed of our work and decisions.

If you, or someone you know, wants to receive these BOCC newsletter emails, forward this email and click here to subscribe.
