Opening Reception February 10,
Artist Spotlight - Steve Williams
Sometimes it's best to let the artist's statement... make the statement:
Prior to 2007, my work focused primarily on traditional mediums such as bronze, stone, wood and cast iron. Working with these materials helped me to appreciate the relationship between the timelessness of the materials and how they related to my work at the time. I enjoyed, and still enjoy, working with traditional materials, however, I soon found myself interested in exploring more diverse materials and conceptual approaches in my work.
For the past few years my approach to art-making has been as a receptive co-creator cycling through phases of playfulness, exploration, intuition and observation. For me, making art is not something separate from life but an extension of life; I think the ordinary has the potential to be art if it is engaged in and experienced as such.
In every object or activity, there is a complex web of associations and meaning as well as the opportunity for re-interpretation. I like what conceptual artist David Ireland said, “You can’t make art by making art.” I have come to realize that when I move out of the way and stop trying to “make art,” it is then that insight emerges, and I get clues from the materials themselves.
Join us February 10th from 7-11 and celebrate Steve's creations at PottersWife. A neat guy, traveling all the way from Toledo for the show. Its gonna be fun... don't miss it!
