Baker Institute Update: MD Anderson's John Mendelsohn joins the Baker Institute
Dr. John Mendelsohn, president of MD Anderson, to join the Baker Institute

Houston cancer pioneer Dr. John Mendelsohn has been named the L.E. and Virginia Simmons Senior Fellow in Health and Technology Policy at the Baker Institute. Mendelsohn, who steps down Sept. 1 as president of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, will conduct research on a range of policy issues that include health care costs and effectiveness and commercial applications of biomedical research. He will begin his duties at the Baker Institute in March 2012 after a sabbatical at Harvard University and MIT in Cambridge, Mass.

"It is a great honor to welcome Dr. Mendelsohn to the Baker Institute," said founding director Edward P. Djerejian. "[His] appointment will enhance the Baker Institute's health economics program by bringing together an internationally recognized leader and renowned practitioner in the medical field with top policy researchers shaping the public debate on health care choices and costs."

Mendelsohn will work closely with Vivian Ho, Ph.D., James A. Baker III Institute Chair in Health Economics, and the researchers associated with the Health Policy Forum. He will focus on the identification and evaluation of new technologies, therapeutics and best practices, as well as the promotion of policy recommendations to improve national and global health outcomes. This new position was made possible by the generosity of L.E. and Virginia Simmons.

"Technology plays a critical role in medicine today, and policymakers are looking for the best ways to evaluate and understand these tools of the future," Mendelsohn said. "My new position at the Baker Institute will allow me to contribute to these important decisions and employ my background as a practitioner, researcher and leader in the medical field. I am also excited about joining the Baker Institute Health Economics Program, which I have long admired for its collaborative work at Rice University, across the Texas Medical Center and with the global health community."

Mendelsohn has served as president of MD Anderson for 15 years. He will remain on the MD Anderson faculty as co-director of the new Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Institute for Personalized Cancer Therapy.
