Your June Newsletter from Healthy Minds!

Dear Supporter,

Summer is truly upon us, we hope you had a happy solstice and have some positive plans for the next couple months as we enjoy the better weather.

An opportunity to get outside more perhaps? Take the little ones out for a picnic? Take some time to nurture your creativity?

Whatever it might be, we hope you have a summer full of wellbeing!

Art and crafts for wellbeing is BACK!

Our Arts & Crafts for wellbeing group is back!

Every 2nd and 4th Thursday each month, 12.30 - 2pm at our Halifax Office, 1 King Street, HX1 1SR. Please note we regret the venue is not wheelchair accessible.

A light hearted space for people to make some creative connections. Each session is themed. Past activities have included mask making, Zentangling and origami.

You don’t need to be arty to join in, just an interest in creating your own work in a relaxed group.

Wellbeing Trail Success
In early June our Upper Valley Team joined forces with local groups and organisations to run an incredible 7-day programme of activities to support good mental health and wellbeing.

The Wellbeing Trail was jam-packed full of fantastic sessions and thanks to the wonderful generosity and kindness of the providers, everything on the programme was completely FREE!

This meant more people had the opportunity to try something new, and from nature sessions, dance, yoga, tai-chi, golf, gardening, therapeutic sessions and much, much more, there was plenty to choose from.
"The Wellbeing Trail activities proved to have a hugely positive impact on people and helped individuals discover new ways to support their wellbeing.

"One lady shared how after her therapeutic session at The Wellness Space she felt better than she had done in years, and she's now aiming to make this a regular part of her self-care. Similar feedback has been echoed by everyone we've spoken to since the Wellbeing Trail, showing just how beneficial it is to step outside our comfort zone and try something new!
"It's really important to stay curious and discover new ways we can help ourselves stay well, and the Wellbeing Trail provided an opportunity for people to do this."

- Sam, Project Worker in the Recovery & Support Upper Valley Team
We'd like to say a huge thank you to Full Circle Funerals for supporting this event and the local providers whose generosity enabled this programme to happen!
Open Mic for Mental Health
The finale of the Upper Valley Wellbeing Trail was our popular Open Mic for Mental Health. We have run a few of these Open Mic events now and they are always such welcoming, non-judgemental spaces for people to open up in creative ways, share their talents and celebrate wellbeing.
It's safe to say our event at the beautifully refurbished space at The Old Sorting Office on Rise Lane was an emotional one.

We were honoured to listen to people's stories and share a sense of strength and support for one another.

One person who attended shared that although they guard their emotions closely, this event helped them open up and really sit with and explore their emotions for the first time in years.
One of our performers, Rebecca, has been kind enough to share a video of her piece, watch it here. With this emotive poem, Rebecca tells her story of her experiences and mental health journey throughout the pandemic and how she has found joy in movement and dance. We hope her words give you hope.

Re-Mixy at Mixenden Park

Community Health & Wellbeing Worker Diane headed to Mixenden Park recently to connect with local people:

"We did activities for children of all ages and had a suggestion board for both adults and kids to add what wanted to see in their community. Some of the things they said included...

'Somewhere for the kids to go',  'Walk and talk groups', 'More funfairs', 'Jumble sales'

"I was able to talk to people and let them know about our new Community Health & Wellbeing team and how we are coming to their doorstep to help them reconnect with the community. In North Halifax area I will be offering support for challenges people are facing, or just a chat if that's what they need."

Fundraising News
Fun and Games at Halifax Charity Gala

We were very honoured to be invited to the 64th Halifax Gala on Saturday 11 June.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all staff and volunteers for getting involved in making this day happen to help us raise an amazing £267.32!

Healthy Minds volunteer Dean tells us all about the day...

"Well my day began early, I had decided to walk from my home in Boothtown and back after the gala (I had to get a few miles in before my Marathon fundraiser in October).

"When everyone arrived it was time to put up gazebos, fill them and arrange chairs, not an easy task as the wind was quite gusty, part of the time was given to chasing after leaflets, balloons etc that decided they didn't want to be part of our display!

"We had throw the bean bag in the bucket, lucky dip, face painting (Alex always had a queue!), Henna hand painting, Cath had a play area for tots with blankets, books and a play kitchen. Me? I wandered around with my bucket, giving away tea packs, seed packs and tea bags. Thank you to young Max who was very helpful.

"The day was brilliant, I walked 9 miles and it was even sunny and there was a big crowd. It was a fun day out but hard work, I did have to take a short break every so often as I not too good with crowds but this didn't take away my enjoyment of the day.

"I really enjoy volunteering for Healthy Minds, it has always given me pleasure to make people happy and I get to do it with Healthy Minds whether it is at fundraisers like this, walks for wellbeing or other Healthy Minds events."
Nikki and Kath's next big swim

Our work in schools

This month has been super busy at Time Out. We have a new school workshop around sleep which is proving very popular and are busy running wellbeing groups.

We are working closely with Todmorden High School and Brooksbank school’s alternate provision, Link, this month, around wellbeing and staying safe. Feedback has been very positive and the only criticisms we are receiving is that young people wish for us to stay longer!

It is very apparent that young people enjoy having the freedom to talk about their problems with people who understand the pressures young people face. Some feedback this month included:

“I learned that I am enough,” “My favourite thing is being able to talk,” “I don’t need to compare myself,” “These groups are amazing”

The Great Get Together

Time out was invited to The Great Get Together in Hebden Bridge at the weekend and a fantastic day of fun was had by all ages.

We spoke to a lot of families and our wacky photo booth went down a treat – as you can see from some of our pictures.

We even got to meet the Mayor of Hebden Bridge! Reach4Ward ran this event in memory of Jo Cox and it was an amazing day that we were lucky to be a part of

Summer Activities Programme

And finally, we have a programme free workshops for children and young people over the summer holidays including dance, drama, 3-D art, animation, creative writing and more!
There is also the opportunity for young people who want to develop their creative skills to gain a Bronze Arts Award qualification as part of an August summer school programme called Hive Minds (see poster below)
The activities programme and booking details are currently being added to the website, so keep an eye on the events page for more information: or email:
