The GOP Establishment is at it Again!

Virginia Beach, VA --- Just when you thought the GOP would get over its internal favoritism, conflicts of interest, and poor decision-making, they managed to pull it off again! On May 13th, following Delegate Jason Miyares’ GOP nomination for Attorney General, Chairman of the 82nd House District Committee of the Republican Party,  John Clay Atkinson,  issued the Official Call that the election for the GOP nominee for the House of Delegates 82nd District would be held on Saturday, June 5th, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, at Galilee Episcopal Church - 3928 Pacific Ave at the oceanfront, and that it would not be announced through the local newspaper.
Kathy Owens exclaimed “I actually thought it was a joke when I heard the date and that location. But after reality set in, all I could think of was how the voters in the other 90 percent of the district would feel when they found out, or if they would ever find out at all!”
There are four main concerns of the Vote for Owens Campaign when it comes to the date and location chosen:
  1. The location within the district. Galilee Church is on the extreme outside fringe of the district at the oceanfront, clearly disenfranchising 90 percent of the voters in places such as Thalia, Malibu, Edinburg, Kings Grant, Lynnhaven, and the northern parts of Great Neck.
  2. The date. Saturday, June 5th, falls within the peak of oceanfront tourist season, making traffic and tourist activity a deterrent for election-day attendance. And with the construction along Laskin Road, the traffic will only be worse.
  3. Notice to Eligible Voters. The Legislative District Committee has agreed to waive the publishing of the call in a local newspaper, so only dues-paying members of the Republican Party of Virginia Beach will receive notice.  This effectively disenfranchises all other eligible voters who would otherwise only receive notification through the newspaper.
  4. Election Integrity. The only other candidate in the race is a long-standing member of the Galilee Church, giving that candidate a clear “home-field” advantage and raising the specter of a serious conflict of interest.

The Vote for Owens Campaign is not alone in this view as many other local Republicans voiced their concerns about this questionable decision. Business owner and Former Navy SEAL Bill Hellman stated “This intentional bias is a disgrace and leaves a smear on the face of the Republican Party of Virginia Beach.  But I have no doubt Kathy will turn this around to her favor because she is a bad-ass leader who has faced and overcome adversity before.“
In the end, the Vote for Owens Campaign intends to secure the Republican Nomination - no matter the location. However, in this time when there is so much energy in the Party to return integrity to politics in the state and country, it is our recommendation the election be held a central and neutral location, away from the over-crowded oceanfront area, to allow for maximum voter turnout and a fair and transparent election process.
