Help Stop Racial Profiling in Arizona

Tell Governor Brewer to veto SB1070!

Whether you reside in the state or not, Arizona Governor Brewer needs to hear your opposition to the Anti-Immigrant bill now before her.

Background

The Arizona House and Senate have passed a bill (SB1070) that would empower police officers to stop and interrogate every individual in the state regarding citizenship status and make it a crime to be an undocumented person in Arizona. If a person does not immediately present documents proving that he/she is legally in the US, that person may be criminally prosecuted, jailed and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation. The bill contains no safeguards against racial profiling and increases the likelihood of arbitrary arrest and detention.

Senator McCain, who is facing a tough election primary challenge, has endorsed this act which has been named a racial profiling act by several faith and community leaders. Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony issued a statement saying that "The Arizona legislature just passed the country's most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law. The tragedy of the law is its totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources."

In conjunction with the faith coalition working on border issues - the Border Working Group - we find the bill recently passed by Arizona's state legislature and currently on its way to Governor Jan Brewer's desk - SB1070 - so dangerously misguided that we feel we cannot sit silently.  And you shouldn't either!

Take action here: Tell Governor Brewer to veto SB1070

I. Send an e-mail to Gov. Brewer through America's Voice
II. Send a fax to Gov. Brewer through Credo Action
III. And for those in Arizona, add your signature to the Border Action Network's petition saying "enough is enough!"

Granting police the authority to investigate the immigration status of any person they encounter if they have 'reasonable suspicion' that the person may be undocumented encourages racial profiling and pulls officers and resources away from the important job of tackling dangerous, criminal activity.  Such measures would erode needed confidence and trust of residents to ensure violent crimes are reported and witnesses come forward - gravely jeopardizing police's efforts to protect communities and promote public safety.

Tell Your Senators to Support Financial Reform
National Call-in Week - Call Your Senator Today!

The Senate will vote soon about financial reform.  The choice is simple:  will they stand with us, or with the big Wall Street banks that crashed our economy and cost us millions of jobs?

Wall Street is spending $1.4 million per day to fight reform.  Don't let them win!  The stakes are too high:  call your Senators and tell them to stand with Main Street, not Wall Street.

Tell them we need a consumer protection agency with teeth, an end to the casino economy, and no more taxpayer bailouts.  We need real reform now!
