Introducing Sal, our helper bot

Meet SalWe have a new Grateful employee named Sal, an AI bot that can help you reserve classes, pay for packages and retrieve Zoom links - all over text message or through an interface on our website.  Sometimes things go wonky with the Mindbody app or web interface, so this offers you an alternative way to schedule a class.  Sal is learning on the job, so please forgive them if they don't always understand your exact phrasing.  Simple commands work best, i.e. "Reserve Lela's Wednesday class" or "Zoom links".

You can get in touch with Sal 24/7 by texting 847-565-2756. Please give it a try and let us know what you think. We're paying extra for this service, so it would be helpful to know if you find it worthwhile.

Reserve in Advance...or class might be canceled

With the aim of respecting our teachers' time as well as continue to be able to offer virtual streaming classes, we have a request:
  1. If you want to attend a hybrid class virtually, please sign up at least 1 hour in advance.  If no one is signed in for virtual attendance before class starts, we will not go to the additional trouble of setting up the laptop.
  2. If no one is signed up for any type of class 1 hour before it starts, we reserve the right to cancel the class or hold it exclusively on Zoom.  We want to respect the time it takes teachers to prepare for class. If you make a mistake and forget to sign up and the class turns out to be canceled, email us and we will send you a recording of a previous class.
  3. If you're signed up to receive a recording of a class but you're the only person registered, we won't require the teacher to teach a brand new class. Instead, we will email you and offer you a recording from a previous week.

Eliza Hofman returns!

We are delighted to re-welcome Eliza - one of Grateful's first teachers - back to Sundays from 9-10a for Mindful Vinyasa, starting on April 3.  This class will be held exclusively in the studio, not on Zoom, while Stacia's 8:30a Sunday class will remain just on Zoom.

For your consideration this week

Qigong is a Chinese healing art that uses breathing, movement, visualization and focused intention to circulate qi (energy/life force). It helps revitalize the body and supports well-being. This style of qigong features continuous gentle movements, tapping to awaken qi meridian lines, and guided meditative imagery to mirror the way nature flows.

Lisa created the Spring Qigong practice to help you harmonize with the beginning of a new cycle of seasons. Traditional Chinese medicine associates Spring with elemental Wood: a pattern of rebirth and growth, embodied in functions of the liver & gallbladder. It is an auspicious time to support physical and mental detoxification, and align with the yang energies of expansion and inspiration.

The workshop will conclude with a 15-minute sound bath, where participants can luxuriate in vibratory delight as Lisa fills the room with crystal singing bowls, chimes, Native American flute and vocal tones.

This workshop will be held IN PERSON AT THE STUDIO. Studio Covid policies apply: masks for all, one-time proof of vaccination by email or in-person.

Cost: $30, members save 15%

Yay! Spring is coming! All of nature is coming alive and reaching towards the sunlight. There is also a lot happening underground. Plants are sending roots into the ground to anchor and provide nourishment. As we move into the season, there is tremendous support for our own growth as well. We may find ourselves reaching towards things that didn't feel possible in the depths of winter.  We are profoundly supported by nature as we continue to grow into ourselves, grounded and nourished as we reach out and grow.

Please join us for an evening of yoga, exploring the movements of reaching, extending, lengthening, opening and expanding. Through movement, breath and yoga nidra, you will feel lighter and more open - welcoming Spring inside and out!

This workshop is part 3 of a monthly series exploring the 5 Essential Movements. Each month we will explore a different movement as it manifests in our bodies, breath, the season, and other meanings as they unfold. Please join us for as many sessions as you'd like:

  • March 28 - Reaching, extending, lengthening, opening, expanding
  • April 25 - Grasping, holding, manifesting, realizing desires
  • May 23 - Pulling, drawing towards, bringing in, centering
  • June 20 - Return to Yielding, taking it in, resting in satisfaction, integration

Held in Zoom Studio 1. Each workshop will be recorded. The recording will be available for two weeks after each workshop.

(You can email us to purchase the recording of a past workshop.)

Cost: $30/workshop, $160/all six
Members save 15%, sliding scale gladly offered

Two New Weekly Evening Classes!

Jane Alexander headshotEvening yogis rejoice!  We have a new 5:30-6:30p Tuesday class starting this week with Jane Alexander. She is a yoga therapist with experience supporting recovery of all kinds, whether from surgery, illness or addiction.  Try a free 15-minute neck and shoulder reset miniclass with her.

The class will follow Sarah's Friday format of "Steady and Strong Yoga", with a particular focus on core strength.  This means much more than just ab work!  Jane is especially savvy to the role of the pelvic floor in supporting the rest of the central axis, and her class will be an excellent addition to our biomechanics-savvy weekly offerings.  You can attend in person (it's nice!) or via Zoom.

Nick's Newsletter

From Nick's latest reflections on the end of his sabbatical and return to teaching:

So after spending many years refining the content of my teaching, I am inspired to turn my focus to developing the ritual process of yoga classes. While still weaving in my various scientific and philosophical fascinations, I hope my classes can become more effective, impactful weekly rituals for those who wish to attend. In this vein, I am de-emphasizing the “study” aspect by changing my class names back to Hatha Basics (Saturdays at 12:15p) and Hatha Yoga and Meditation (Mondays at 10a). I am also making my classes 15 minutes shorter, so they don’t require such a big commitment.

(Never fear, yoga nerds: “Yoga Studies” will live on as workshops, book clubs and specialized series that take up particular topics.)

Our highly-qualified teachers offer weekly group classes, specialized educational series, mentorship and training for new teachers and health professionals, private instruction, yoga nidra, and perinatal yoga.

We aim to become an inclusive center for deep yogic study and self-transformation. Students of all ages, religious beliefs and experience levels are welcome in our community.
