YOU & IABC/Montréal
October 2016

A word from Maria

Pedal to the metal

Starting this month, we’re aligning our newsletter’s editorial calendar with IABC’s CW Magazine, a business communication resource I recommend whole-heartedly. This makes October, the month to talk about next level PR and the changing status of our discipline.

And, speaking of status, IABC/Montréal is very proud to bring you a new project that kept us very busy over the summer: Comms Metropole, a series of video interviews with international experts in business communication.  Episode 1 features Jim Shaffer of the Jim Shaffer Group, IABC Fellow and internationally recognized business advisor, leadership coach, author and speaker. Jim and I spoke about the importance of connecting communication and business strategies to add measurable value. You can watch the full interview here and if you like what you hear, you may also want to sign up for Jim’s latest webinar How to Add Measurable Value as a Strategic Adviser.

In our October issue:
  • A scroll through the 2016 Global Communication Report produced by the University of Southern California’s Center for Public Relations and The Holmes Report. Discover the scale of change disrupting the PR industry: the talent challenge, the evolution of the media landscape, growth drivers, budgets and metrics as well as then changing relationships between agencies and clients… this report has it all.
  • A new episode of our popular section IABC around the World that makes the business case for Facebook at Work.  Courtesy of Ketchum London’s Stephen Waddington, Partner and Chief Engagement Officer, Ketchum,  Visiting Professor in Practice, Newcastle University, Chairman of Future Proof policy unit and Past President, CIPR. And yes, this is how he keeps himself busy.
  • A look back at our September video boot camp with Candidio where we learned to shoot great quality video on a smartphone. Find out what some of the 35 participants who joined us at 8:45 a.m. on a Saturday had to say. Thank you, Lasting Motion, for the video summary.
  • Information about the upcoming and Media Measurement free webinar and the Global PR Summit where IABC/Montréal is a sponsor.
And since we’re looking at the future of PR, I’d like to leave you with The Millennial Economy, an eye-opening report from EY and the Economic Innovation Group that provides a different view of a generation of hard-workers uncertain about the future and convinced the economy is failing them. While the survey was conducted in the U.S. on a sample of 1,200 millennials, I’m sure you’ll find the results equally relevant for Canada, where this demographic represented a good 28% of the population in 2014. That’s about 9.9 million Canadians for those of us who love numbers.
This October, consider the implications.

“No longer must PR pros rely solely on the benevolence of journalists to advance their clients’ news and narratives. There are a myriad new ways to gain traction for one’s message or messenger that have little to do with convincing a journalist of its editorial merit.”
