YOU & IABC/Montréal
March 2016

A word from Maria

Spring is here: get moving to create connections

Spring is around the corner and – whenever it gets to Montréal– it will bring a sense of renewed energy and a desire to do better, go faster and achieve more.
For a communicator, working closely with the C-suite and ensuring our profession is recognized as the management function it is, remains the hallmark of a job well done. This is why we decided to take a closer look at the complex relationship between our profession and the leadership team.
The March issue is one of our richest yet. First, discover two research reports [a recent one from PR Huston and a second one led by our own IABC/Montréal Board member Deborah Hinton] that provide valuable insights into the new definition of “added-value”. Then, sign up for the most anticipated comms speed-networking event in Montréal - and if you’re a senior communicator who wants to give back, my colleague Karla would love to hear from you. Last but not least, remind a friend that March is IABC Member Month and encourage them to join us for a chance to win great prizes. And also, remember to renew your own membership if you’re about to lapse.
I hope this issue gives you a few pointers about how to better position the value of your work. As always, I’d love to hear what tips and tricks keep you on the leadership agenda.  Drop me a line anytime to share what gets you moving to #createconnection.

Business partnering: from functional expert to trusted advisor
As communications experts, we often feel that we struggle to make an impact at senior business level. We have a difficult balance to achieve: work at the intersection of advice and expertise, while demonstrating solid business acumen to cement a reputation as credible advisors. To help you meet this challenge, IABC/ Montréal, in partnership with IC Kollectif, is delighted to invite communications experts – Directors, Managers and Senior Advisors – to a two-hour workshop with Stephen Welch.

Latest research:
The CEO as Communicator-in-Chief

Ten  years  ago,  the  CEO  was  someone  who tended  to front  set-piece  external  and  internal announcements  on  behalf  of  his  or  her  company.   Twitter and Facebook, SnapChat and Instagram, were figments of the imagination.  Today, as social media has become a reputation trading platform, CEOs and their companies are ‘always on’.  Technologies are evolving as should our communications practices.  A recent report by HoustonPR takes a closer look at the real value attached to the communicative CEO.
Sweeten your skills
The report Where are we? Where should we be? ―by IABC/Montréal member Deborah Hinton, change management expert and communications specialist,  and Neil Griffiths, internal communications Manager at ERM―is based on a survey of over 100 communication professionals and provides an important CEO-view of the opportunities and challenges facing senior communication executives.  The dynamic duo is considering updating the research to find out if anything has changed since 2013.  In your opinion, are communicators where they should be in relation to the C-suite?
IABC around the world
This month we go to Indiana, U.S. to find out how communicators should deal with the executive suite. Rocky Walls, CEO at 12starsmedia―a video production company that embraces simple communication to connect with audiences―shares his top tips to help communicators better engage with high-powered executives.
