FAU CARD Early Childhood Conference: Assessment, Identification and Intervention for Young Children with ASD

Despite the fact that ASD can be reliably diagnosed in children as young as two, the average age of first-time diagnosis of ASD remains around the age of four. This finding is especially concerning when considering the fact that the strongest predictor of optimal outcome in children with ASD is early intervention. Early intensive intervention between the ages of three to five capitalizes upon a critical window of rapid brain development. Without an accurate diagnosis, toddlers with ASD do not receive appropriate treatment and miss the opportunity to forever alter their developmental trajectory. This has lifelong consequences not only for the child’s development, but also for their family and for society as a whole.

This daylong training will give an overview of the writing process and the issues that students with disabilities, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), face when completing written expression. Participants will get an overview of Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), which is an evidence-based strategy in writing instruction. SRSD has over 130 published studies to date and has been implemented with students in grade 2-12, who are less skilled writers and who struggle with self-regulation. Studies have been conducted with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional behavioral disorders, and ASD. In addition, some specific technology tools for written expression will be shared with participants, in hopes to make writing a more fun, authentic experience across both school and home settings.
