Family Transition Workshop

This presentation focuses on exploring ways to be successful for young adults who are on the non-traditional path following high school graduation (i.e., young adults with severe/multiple disabilities, deaf-blindness). Using a person-centered approach toward futures planning, participants will discover purposeful, meaningful and enjoyable activities that build on the strengths, skills and talents of their young adult children. A panel of representatives from state agencies will discuss services for young adults. Space is limited to 20 participants.

This 2-day workshop will focus on the following topics:
Day 1: You’re Going to Love this Kid! – Participants will learn practical ways of supporting students with autism spectrum labels and other disabilities within a general education classroom. Topics addressed include listening to the voices of those with autism, creating more active and responsive lessons, providing opportunities for communication and social skill development, and using fascinations and special interests as a support tool.

Day 2: From Text Maps to Memory Caps: Differentiating Instruction in K-12 Classrooms – Educators will learn strategies and adaptations to engage, motivate, support, and inspire a diverse group of students by creating classroom games, study aids, visual supports, teaching tools, and review materials.

The Autism Summer Institute is an annual workshop aimed at providing high quality professional development to a wide spectrum of professionals, including ESE and general education teachers, guidance counselors, school psychologists, SLPs, OTs, instructional assistants, administrators, and parents who impact the lives of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Day 1: Tuesday, July 16, 2019 Keynote: Social Skills Teaching Kits for Children with Autism Presented by: Joel Shaul, LCSW

Day 2: Wednesday, July 17, 2019 Keynote: What Happens When It’s More Than ASD? Presented by: Josh Nadeau, Ph.D.

Each day, the keynote will be followed by two 90-minute breakout sessions.
