What a hurricane can do

If your Easy English NEWS hasn't gotten to you yet, you are experiencing a bit of Hurricane Sandy even if you're on the West Coast or Midwest. With New York and New Jersey without power for 8 to 14 days, things were bound to get backed up. Our editors were in the dark, printers and packers with no electric power for a week, webmaster working night and day to undo the damage to his Atlantic City home filled with sand... Who knows how delayed the mail and UPS will be still with Thanksgiving delays and the beginning of Christmas mail?

So if you're a subscriber, be patient. The paper went to press November 15. So has the teacher's guide. It will get to you as soon as the mails and UPS make it possible.

We here in Virginia Beach could have felt the brunt of it had the monster Hurricane Sandy turned west a few hours sooner. We were lucky; and only a flicker of lights. The sights on TV of the devastation, ruin, trauma, and heartbreak of the coast farther north was shocking and unsettling. That could be us; those are our readers, our teachers, our friends, our sons and daughters and grandchildren in the mess up there. Unthinkable that people stayed in their sopping wet, unheated, unlit homes to protect them from heartless looters. Yes, we do indeed need electricity...and government. And the Red Cross, Salvation Army, churches, temples, and each other. This is big.

More than 3,000 people downloaded my free booklet "Hurricane Safety in Simple English" presumably to reproduce and use with classes in some cases. I have to say, ordinary preparations were totally inadequate for the storm surge. The effective part of the book for those closest to the oceans was that a person had to heed warnings when told to evacuate. I'm hoping that it may have saved some lives. That's why we wrote it and made it freely available. Let me know.

As I write this, the aftermath of Sandy is gone from the evening news, replaced by the scandals and hearings of Benghazi and Petraeus. One wonders if a new Watergate is coming up. What a large cast of characters...and behaviors.
