From the Chair:

Kim Bauer

I hope you had a wonderful summer and are enjoying the first few days of fall!

Your NBCAAM Board has been busy moving forward with the Continuing Education aspect of membership. Here is the latest:

1. Effective September 1, 2013, anyone applying to sit for the NBCAAM exam will now have a 2 year membership included in the cost of taking the exam. The cost has risen from $145 to $175. We are hoping that the 2 year membership will allow new practitioners time to get their business going and take advantage of the member benefits before being asked to submit CEUs.

2. When the initial two year membership expires, renewing your membership will cost $140 for two more years and at renewal time the CEUs will be due. Stay tuned for more details which we will post on our website about the CEU requirements.

3. Existing members will receive an email from Membership Director, Lisa Ruthing, with information about your CEUs and how to renew your membership.

We are excited about these new changes and we hope you are too. Continuing Education is a very important part of demonstrating that we, NBCAAM-Certified Practitioners, maintain on-going education and affirm our commitment to continued learning and the NBCAAM code of ethics of practice.

Kim Bauer
NBCAAM Chair

A Happy Autumnal Equinox to All!

After the magnificent harvest of the Summer, thanks to its Fire energy, the Fall and its Metal energy support our letting go of the waste, the old and stale in our lives, leaving us purified and ready to renew. Like trees letting go of their beautiful leaves, it's time for us to let go of the old clutter: toxins, pollutants, emotions, regrets, attachment, intellectual and spiritual garbage...

The Metal energy is also about protection and drives the immune system. So Metal energy is the connection between detoxification (letting go of the waste and old), maximum immunity and the Fall season of flu and cold. This is where the power of detoxification comes into play: to provide the help and support to eliminate what the body needs to eliminate but cannot by itself. Detoxification will move the old toxic burden out and purify your body, providing maximum support and strength for your immune system to shield you totally from viruses, bacteria and fungi. The best protection against diseases comes from within, not from vaccines!

Acupressure points for Detox:

Large Intestine (LI) 4Great Eliminator
Located in the web of the dewclaw, if present (between thumb and index finger in humans)
Liver (LV) 3Great Rushing:
Great Rushing can be imagined as a great physical, emotional and spiritual roto-rooter, breaking up blockages and allowing energy and blood to flow freely and detoxify. Located between 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones (on the upper side of the foot in the depression in the webbing between the first toe and the second toe).
Lung (LU) 1Central Palace
A central place where nourishing and invigorating energies are born. Slide your finger along your collarbone to the outer end, just above the armpit. Central Palace is located at the level of the 1st intercostal space, medial to the greater tubercle of the humerus, in the pectoral muscle (the natural depression just under the collarbone and just above the armpit).
Lung (LU) 9Great Abyss
A direct line to the Lungs, where it activates and energizes the Lung energy. Located on the medial aspect of the radiocarpal joint, just cranial to the radial artery (on the crease of the palm side of the wrist in the depression at the base of the thumb).

There is a natural rhythm in letting things come and letting things go in our lives, breathing in the oxygen of life, and discharging the toxic aspects of the psychic air.

Acu-Horse: A Guide to Equine Acupressure
An Excerpt from the NEW ACU-HORSE: A Guide to Equine Acupressure due out in the fall of 2013!
by Amy Snow and Nancy Zidonis

Chapter Ten
Equine Acupressure Session Protocol

Horses are sensitive, intelligent animals. Today, their adaptability and capacity to learn has made them an ideal companion in human therapeutic assistance and sport. It’s gratifying to be able to offer our horses an acupressure session that’s truly beneficial for them. Equine acupressure is gentle, yet powerful and horses are incredibly responsive.

When you begin the acupressure session, the most important element is for you to be mentally present. Your horse is highly aware of your mental state. In fact, it can be scary to think how attuned your horse is to your energy. Take your mind off him for an instant and he knows it; his behavior can change in a flash.

An acupressure session is a dynamic, energetic interaction between two equal partners—you and your horse. Your role as a partner in the acupressure session is to bring the clear intention of enhancing the horse’s health and well-being. When planning your acupressure session, you need to clear your mind, breathe, and use your knowledge, experience, and intuition. The other half of the partnership is your horse. He brings his innate ability to feel energetic sensations and assist in the balancing process.

Don’t be disturbed if your horse doesn't display his pleasure or internal sensory experience during an acupressure session. Lots of horses will walk away and shake after the session to help integrate the energy work you've just done. Then again, other horses are quite expressive throughout the entire session, especially as they become more familiar with enjoying an acupressure session.

NOTE: The next section goes on to the Acupressure Protocol. Watch for the new Acu-Horse!

USDA Cracks Down on Internet Pet Sales

By Ken Niedziela

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has narrowed the definition of a retail pet store in a move that brings more Internet animal sellers under federal oversight.

The government on Tuesday issued a final rule that is expected to affect up to 4,640 dog breeders, 325 cat breeders and 75 rabbit breeders nationwide.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) proposed the rule in May 2012 in an effort to address what the agency calls "sight unseen” transactions in which a buyer never sees the animal or its living conditions before purchase. The rule forces many of those breeders to comply with Animal Welfare Act guidelines.

"We know that if the federal standards are being met, the animals are getting humane care and treatment,” said Ed Avalos, undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs. "By revising the definition of retail pet store to better suit today’s marketplace, we will now improve the welfare of more pet animals sold sight unseen.”
