Western Metropolitan Regional Council - Newsletter
Hi  Western,
Earth Carers volunteers have been super busy over the last couple of months sharing the message of Full lives, empty bins'! And just around the corner is Plastic Free July - get ready!

Earth Carers News: Upcoming sustainability events: Nabilla, Amy, Rebecca & Gabrielle

Welcome to our newest Earth Carers!
The March Earth Carers course was our biggest yet - we even had to turn some folks away and ask them to come to our next course (in October)! This group of Earth Carers dived in to all the activities, tours and challenges. If you think this looks like fun, join us next time!

Thanks to all our volunteers!
Without our volunteers the Earth Carers program would be pretty stale by now! We've been busy at:
  • St Luke's EcoFair washing up and making cardboard castles
  • Perth Garden Festival which was a fantastic event once we got our position sorted out(!)
  • Mosman Park Community Fair letting peeps know what to do with their e-waste and HHW
Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who come along to events, chat to the locals and share the vision of a world with less waste!

Plastic Free July

Yup, Plastic Free July is just around the corner - will you accept the challenge of trying to go with out single use plastic for a month? Don't forget that if you find this concept a little intimidating you can opt for the Top 4 Challenge and avoid plastic bags, plastic water bottles, drinking straws and coffee cups. Speaking of coffee cups...

Bring one, get one tree
You may remember that in 2013 Earth Carers won $5,000 for the Plastic Free July Campaign from the Waste Authority's Infinity Award. Well, we are putting the prize money to good use in 2014 to encourage people to remember their reusable coffee cups. The idea is that when you bring your reusable coffee cup to a participating cafe, we will make a note of it and plant a tree or shrub for you in a local park. Huge thanks to our local friends groups and councils who will be planting for us! So, look out for participating cafes in July and remember your cup!

Earth Carers in Action
Rachel Riley and Marie-Helene Marsolais

Rachel and Marie-Helene met at the March 2013 Earth Carers course and went on to do the Living Smart course too. They've grown their friendship and have teamed up on many volunteering occasions. A particular attraction seems to be washing up. That makes double trouble with bubbles! Thanks Rachel and Marie-Helene!

 Recycling Station at Cottesloe Central
Gabrielle has now placed the fifth and final recycling station at Bunnings at Cottesloe Central. So now you can recycle batteries, CFL globes, printer cartridges and mobile phones with ease! Check our website for other locations.

Earth Carers at Schools
Earth Carers have been busy at St Hilda's Primary School teaching the year 4 and 5s all about 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. By the end of the session they got it - REDUCE is the most important! Clever kids! If your kids go to school in Claremont, Cottesloe, Mosman Park, Peppermint Grove or Subiaco and you'd like us to visit just ask a teacher to get in touch with us!

Compost in May!
The Summer is over and now its time to garden and to garden you need compost! There are lots of lovely composting events around Perth at the moment - check this guide for details. EarthWise in Subiaco are hosting lots - here is their program
Look out for our display at the Grove Library and for compost tips take a look at our factsheet.
