Earth Carers News: Upcoming sustainability events: Amy, Rebecca & Libby

Earth Carers Course

The popular Earth Carers course includes five sessions over three weeks (3 week nights and 2 weekend sessions). It gives you the knowledge and skills to live confidently with less waste.  Our next course starts Tuesday 13 October and is already filling.  Our website has all the registration details - Click here to sign up

If you have already done an Earth Carers course and found it useful, please let your friends know!

Plastic Free July
We've just looked at the statistics for Plastic Free July and we're amazed!  In 2011 when we started there were 40 participants, in 2015 this had increased to an estimated 36,000. It's gone viral with people from over 90 countries participating.  If you were one of them we'd love to hear your stories.... and the website is still there if you want more plastic free ideas

The Plastic Free Morning Tea initiative was new this year with over 100 organisations participating. The WA Marine Science Institute won the competition to tell us about their experience.  Here's some of what they had to say "I thank you for organising such a brilliant thing as Plastic Free July! I am still talking about it with people and everyone agrees that the experience of really trying to go without single use plastic was very revelatory. Those of us who wash plastic bags and containers to reuse them and think we don't use much plastic really came face to face with just how insidious plastic is and how we don't even notice"

Bring One, Get One Tree turned 1900 take away coffees into 1900 trees and shrubs this July as we donated a native plant to  bushcare group everytime a customer used a reusable cup.  There were 33 participating cafes and over the two years Bring One, Get One Tree has been running  a total of around 5000 trees have been planted - all thanks to coffee drinkers!

Earth Carers in Action

Gabrielle and Nabilla have gone on maternity leave and we wish them both well over the next exciting and exhausting months.  We've welcomed Libby Eustance to the team full time to hold the fort in their absence.  Libby has been an Earth Carer since 2003(!) and was a Councillor at Mosman Park for nearly 7 years.

Amy and Libby are just finishing the latest Earth Carers Schools course with students from  Perth Modern School -  here they are making their own deodorant.  Do you know any local High School kids who would enjoy learning about rubbish, composting, making plastic-free alternatives and how waste is processed? Get in touch for details
Making deo at Perth Modern

We are so proud of Rebecca - she's been awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to investigate innovative ways to tackle plastic pollution around the world. She'll be off on her travels in February and we are looking forward to hearing what she learns!
