A huge thank you to all our wonderful Earth Carers who have helped in big and small ways to spread the message of 'full lives, empty bins!' We wish you and your loved ones a wonderful, safe and green tinged holiday season.
A little staff update, after her bike accident Rebecca is recovering well and pretty much back to her old self! Phew! She is now relaxing in New Zealand on her family holiday. Gabs is settling in beautifully and has so many good ideas we have had to get ourselves a 'brilliant ideas' whiteboard for the office!
We are really looking forward to next year and all the fantastic events coming up in 2013 - especially Less is More!

Cash for Containers in Cottesloe
If the enthusiasm of kids is anything to go by, the Cash for Containers legislation has a good chance of success! At the Hullabaloo Festival, Earth Carers and Town of Cottesloe staff had dozens of kids lining up to exchange their empty drink container for a 10c refund. A total of 1,110 containers were collected on the day.
At the second event at Cottesloe beach, schools were invited to bring along containers to raise funds. Seven schools participated bringing a combined total of 3,841 containers, with a further 2,816 collected by individuals and passers by. From the Town of Cottesloe, Earth Carers, Two Hands and the Conservation Council WA, a huge thank you to all our volunteers and container collectors!
The petition to support a Cash for Containers Scheme is still open - please register your support!

Did you see the article in the Post?
Last week the Post Newspaper published the article 'Nedlands 'like an unfaithful groom'. The article refers to the fact that the City of Nedlands Council has resolved to seek Expressions of Interest for its waste disposal service.
The City of Nedlands has used the WMRC's Transfer Station in Shenton Park for many years and had provided strong indications they would continue sending their residents waste to the WMRC's facility for waste processing.
The City of Nedlands' decision to seek Expressions of Interest may result in cheap landfill 100km away being selected at the expense of sustainable waste processing around the corner. A decision by the City of Nedlands to not continue using the WMRC's facility will also result in the withdrawal of Nedlands from the Earth Carers programme which will provide a significant financial strain on the programme.
WMRC will be submitting an Expression of Interest.
Let's get the word out there!
All of us at WMRC are keenly anticipating the opening of DiCOM next year! We are looking for avenues to share information and promote this fantastic new technology. WMRC staff are available to talk for your community group. If you are a member of a Rotary club, 'friends of' group, church, men's shed etc let us know and we can come and open open your eyes to the world of waste!
WMRC has a website dedicated to the DiCOM - if you know people who are interested send them this link!
WMRC will be increasing the numbers of tours early in the new year and we will be advertising dates soon!

Australia Day Volunteering
Australia Day fireworks are fun for a lot of people…but they’ve also resulted in a lot of rubbish!
The City of South Perth is one of the councils around the Swan River wanting to put an end to this. They are calling for volunteers to assist them with their recycling station on the South Perth foreshore on Australia Day. People attending the fireworks will be encouraged to bring waste-free picnics and will be given bags for their recycling by South Perth staff. Volunteer work will involve manning the South Perth recycling station (in a safe family area) for a few hours, checking the bags of recycling that people bring to the station and rewarding recyclers with a free camel ride voucher. Free transport, catering, and clothing will be available for volunteers. City of South Perth will donate a fee to volunteer programs assisting them.
