Hi <<First Name>>
Plastic Free July has come and gone...though we hope some plastic free habits have stuck! No rest for us though, we are in the middle of our Earth Carers course and look forward to a whole swag of events coming up!

Earth Carers News: Upcoming sustainability events: Nabilla, Amy & Rebecca

Current Earth Carers course
We have 23 enthusiastic Earth Carers currently on the course! We like to keep the course as fresh and as interesting as we can, so this time our participants were treated with a bin dump (not so fresh) on the first night, thanks to Garbologist Nabilla!

We look forward to welcoming this batch of Earth Carers into the fold!

PLC Earth Carers course
We piloted our first School Earth Carers course in July with around 28 middle and high school students at PLC. The girls got busy with their own bin dump, watched Bag It, donned hi-vis to tour the DiCOM waste processing system and made their own toothpaste, lip balm and deodorant.

Toothpaste making

Touring DiCOM
Since the course the girls have started a committee to reduce the amount of plastic packaging used by the school canteen. They have already suceeded in banning the sale of plastic water bottles! A composting roster has been set up so scraps from the canteen and boarding house kitchens are composted. They also improved the recycling system in the canteen. Well done girls your rock!

Recycling Expo
This year the Waste and Recycling Conference is expanding to include a Recycling Expo featuring a compost workshop, a talk, a debate and a fashion parade! Earth Carers will be there. If you would like to help us on the stall, email us or phone the office on 9384 4003. You can download the flyer here.

Earth Carers in action

Cath from Subiaco is passionate about reducing verge waste going to landfill.  She has set up Western Salvation, a community group committed to giving verge items a second chance. Cath wants to set up a Resource Reuse Arts Facility in Perth’s western suburbs to foster the collection, repair, reuse and recycling of domestic verge waste. You can join the Facebook group here

Hannah helped to organise the PLC Earth Carers course and is now involved in reducing disposable plastic at the canteen. She did Plastic Free July and made a fridge worm farm for her home!

Earth Carers, Finalists in the Infinity Awards
Huge congrats to Earth Carer Claire who was awarded an 'Honourable Mention' in the Waste Champion category in the Infinity Awards. We nominated Claire for the amazing job she did organsing the Less is More Festival in February 2012. Any takers to organise/co-organise this event in 2013?

We were also one of five finalists for our Earth Carers Schools Waste Education Program in the Government category.

We were impressed by the quality and originality of waste projects happening in WA. You can view details of award recipients here.
