Washington, D.C. – The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) announced today that U.S. Rep. Xavier Becerra will be presented with the 2015 Edward R. Roybal Award for Outstanding Public Service. U.S. Rep. Becerra will be honored at a reception in Los Angeles, Calif. on February 19, 2015 and the organization’s annual NALEO Edward R. Roybal Legacy Gala in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2015. Additional details below.
The Edward R. Roybal Award for Outstanding Public Service is presented annually to individuals who have distinguished themselves as devoted public servants to the nation and the Latino community. The award pays tribute to the organization’s founder and President Emeritus, the late Congressman Edward R. Roybal.
NALEO’s 2015 awardee, U.S. Rep. Becerra, has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in his efforts to increase opportunities for Latinos, and promoting issues affecting our nation’s working families. Throughout his tenure in public office, U.S. Rep. Becerra has sought to improve Social Security programs for the Latino community, combat poverty among the working poor, and strengthen the Medicare system, ensuring its long-term viability.
“NALEO is pleased to honor a distinguished Latino public servant whose tireless leadership and work on behalf of the American people upholds the values of our great nation,” said Alex Padilla, NALEO President and California Secretary of State. “Representative Becerra’s extraordinary efforts to improve the quality of life for the Latino community and increase opportunities for a new generation of Latino leaders exemplifies the spirit of service of the late Congressman Roybal.”
First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, U.S. Rep. Becerra currently serves as Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and is a member of the Committee on Ways And Means. Raised by working-class parents, U.S. Rep. Becerra was the first in his family to graduate from college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University and was awarded his Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School in 1984.
NALEO is also pleased to recognize the support of long-standing partner, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, which will serve as the Chair of the 2015 NALEO Edward R Roybal Legacy Gala. For more information about the event, please visit our website or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
