GOVERNMENT OF CANADA CONSULTS ON CAREGIVING BENEFITS AND LEAVES 
Help make the Compassionate Care Benefit more flexible and inclusive. The Government of Canada is holding public consultations October 6 to November 4, 2016 on potential changes to enhance caregiving benefits and unpaid leaves including the Compassionate Care benefit for those caring for someone at end of life. Participate in the online consultation and join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #ConsultingCanadians.

REGISTER NOW!  PALLIATIVE MATTERS CONFERENCE
Palliative Care Matters is a national initiative to develop a national strategy for palliative care based on the input of Canadians. On November 7-9, 206 lend your voice and join the Palliative Care Institute of Covenant Health as it hosts the Consensus Development Conference. Registration is now open.

HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE FIRST: A MONTH OF ACTION
The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association is calling on provincial  and federal governments to make hospice palliative care a priority with its campaign running from October 8 – November 10. They are encouraging Canadians to advocate for quality palliative care and act as champions by speaking to the media, meeting with provincial and federal representatives, sharing and promoting resources. Virtual Hospice supports this campaign and will be sharing resources related to each of the 4 themes on Facebook and twitter.

PALLIATIVE CARE BILL C-277
Last spring, Bill (PMB) C-277 - An Act providing for the development of a framework for Palliative Care in Canada was introduced in the House of Commons. It will come up for debate again this fall. The Quality End-of-Life Care Coalition of Canada (QELCCC) encourages Canadians to sign the petition in support of this bill to raise awareness of palliative care and end-of-life issues.

PEDIATRIC PALLIATIVE CARE IN CANADA IN 2012: A CROSS-SECTIONAL DESCRIPTIVE STUDY
This study, conducted by Kimberley Widger, PhD et al. describes Canadian programs that provide specialized pediatric palliative care in 2012 and the children who received care. Virtual Hospice Clinical Nurse Specialist Simone Stenekes contributed to the study.

NOW OPEN: LILAC TERRACE PALLIATIVE CARE ROOM
Congratulations to Lilac Terrace in Sparwood, BC on the opening of their palliative care room. “It’s for people who would like to die at home but maybe don’t have the proper facilities or equipment or the proper space for family to stay with them. We provide that,” said Deborah Friesen, administrator of Lilac Terrace.

WELL DONE SHANE SINCLAIR!
Virtual Hospice spiritual care advisor Shane Sinclair, PhD will receive the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) Hiroomi Kiwano New Investigator Award during the 2016 World Congress of Psycho-Oncology in Ireland (October 17-21, 2016). This award honours a new investigator for outstanding research contributions in psycho-oncology. Shane’s work in compassion is having international impacts.

EDUCATION IN PALLIATIVE AND END-OF-LIFE CARE - ONCOLOGY (EPEC™-O) WORKSHOP

The deSouza Institute is hosting a workshop on palliative and end-of-life care topics, including core competencies in symptom management, ethical issues and communication skills in palliative care. This workshop will be of interest to clinicians providing end of life care for patients in hospitals and communities. Date: November 4, 2016 in Toronto; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm EST. Register by October 28th, 2016.
