An estimated 400,000 Canadians suffer from heart failure each year. There is growing recognition that a palliative approach can improve quality of life for people with advanced heart disease. CPAC CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer has issued two calls for Expressions of Interest for Palliative and End-of-Life Care and Patient Experience and Outcomes. The submission deadline for both EOIs is February 28, 2013.

INVITATION TO EXPLORE INTEGRATED END-OF-LIFE CARE
The Quality End of Life Care Coalition’s, The Way Forward initiative, recently released two new documents to support the discussion of blending palliative care with community-based health care: Integrating a Palliative Approach into the Management of Chronic, Life-Threatening Diseases: Who, How and When? and Cost-Effectiveness of Palliative Care: A Review of the Literature. WELCOME TO THE TEAM – SHANE SINCLAIR
We are pleased to announce that Shane Sinclair, PhD, Spiritual Care Coordinator at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta, has joined the Virtual Hospice team. In addition to his 13 years of experience providing spiritual care in oncology and palliative settings, Shane is the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Association for Spiritual Care Award of Excellence for Research, and was recently awarded a CIHR grant entitled Understanding Compassion: An empirical approach to cancer care patient’s perspectives and experiences of compassion at the end of life.

NEW RESEARCH ON COMMUNICATION
Harvey M. Chochinov, MD, PhD, FRCS and his team have published new research in the journal Cancer that provides insight into effective health care provider communication and psychosocial patient care. Read Health Care Provider Communication: An Empirical Model of Therapeutic Effectiveness.

SUCTION TOOTHBRUSH
Newly published research from Virtual Hospice team member Sarah Brown, BSc, RN, MN and co-authors from Universities and Dental Schools across the country, indicates that suction toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes are equally effective at reducing pneumonia rates in adults with dysphagia. CONGRATULATIONS LOUISE HANVEY!
Louise Hanvey, Project Director of the National Advance Care Planning Project in Canada was awarded the Quality End-of-Life Care Coalition of Canada’s Award of Excellence in Advocacy on January 25th. The award recognized Ms. Hanvey’s efforts in the advancement of hospice palliative care in Canada, and for her dedication to the development of the Advance Care Planning in Canada Project.

THE PALLIUM PROJECT ENTERS PHASE 3
The Pallium Project welcomes Kathryn Downer as its new National Director. With a revitalized focus on national and international community engagement, The Pallium Project is redesigning its successful Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care (LEAP) course and the Pallium Palliative Pocketbook.
