(1) Helping Immigrant Families with Custody Issues

On March 21, 2017 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Philadelphia Bar Association, Executive Director of HIAS Cathryn Miller-Wilson and HBA Member Stephanie Gonzalez Ferrandez will be providing a training to family law lawyers regarding the range of options available for parents seeking to make plans in case they get deported.  Once trained, lawyers will be asked to assist Know Your Right Sessions, conduct individual consultations for clients at one of the four local non-profit immigration legal services agencies or take a case pro bono.

For those HBA members that are not trained in family law, they desperately need volunteer interpreters. So if you or someone you know is available to act as interpreter, please consider attending this event.

The links to sign up to volunteer and attend the training are here (to volunteer): http://www.philadelphiabar.org/page/ChallengeAheahVolunteer?appNum=3 and here (for the training): http://www.philadelphiabar.org/page/ChallengeAhead?appNum=3.
(2) Help with Intake at a local soup kitchen

St. Francis Inn Clinic is looking for Spanish speaking attorneys to assist with intake at their site.  Volunteering will entail attending the legal clinic, completing an intake form and getting general information about the client and their matter.  They are happy to provide training on this process.  The level of participation and representation is up to the individual attorney but they would welcome attorneys who can take a case pro bono. The remaining clinic dates for this year are:

Tuesday June 6 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Tuesday July 11 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Tuesday November 14 10:00-11:00 a.m.

The population at St. Francis is the poorest in the Philadelphia community. They attend the soup kitchen for meals and so their clinic is scheduled around that meal time.  If you are interested and able to volunteer with this effort please contact Juan M. Baez, Esq. President of the HBAPA - Jbaez13@mail.com
