GREY LYNN 2030 DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

Climate Emergency Update

We are celebrating an achievement that many people, grassroots organisations and the school strike 4 climate actions have helped to make possible. New Zealand declared a climate emergency on the 2nd December, joining the over 1,800 jurisdictions in 32 countries to do the same, and to commit to reducing emissions to avoid a more than 1.5°C rise in global warming! On the 8th December, the digital Auckland Climate Plan was launched. Now, it is time to translate these good intentions into actions! Join Grey Lynn 2030 or your local group that helps you to stay involved.

Consider the "Buyrearchy" this Christmas season.

Christmas is a time with a lot of giving and receiving, and as we look to become more sustainable as a country, changing the habits around gift-giving is one way of doing so. A handmade, upcycled or thrifted gift can be a lot more thoughtful and equally as rewarding for the receiver. If this isn't your style, how about giving your time, knowledge or expertise in some way.

Check out this buyerarchy we've made to help you give your gifts in a more sustainable way this Christmas 🎄 season. Start from the top and keep as high as possible with all of your gifts!

Thank YOU from the GL2030 Trustees

The Grey Lynn 2030 Trust thanks you for your commitment to our community in a year full of changes, learnings and growing beyond what we knew. We wish you all a safe and happy festive season and a wonderful summer holiday! See you back in February!

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING

Grey Lynn Park Festival

The Grey Lynn Park Festival took place on the 21st of November, with the sun shining! We were fortunate to have a stand at the festival and used this to showcase some of Grey Lynn's awesome low waste initiatives to our wider community. A huge thank you to everybody who came and said hello!

A big shout out to the festival organisation team who ensured that it was a Zero Waste Event, and allowed us to encourage people in our networks to come prepared with cutlery, reusable cups, containers and drink bottles.

WHAT'S COMING UP

Donate to the Grey Lynn Food Pantry this Xmas!

Christmas is a time for everybody to celebrate and what better way to celebrate than with food? Our friends at the Grey Lynn Food Pantry are always open and accepting of food donations at their location at 47- 49 Ivanhoe Road, Grey Lynn and also at the Grey Lynn Community Church, 550 Richmond Road.

Grey Lynn 2030 Waste Away will be accepting food donations for the Food Pantry this Sunday, the 13th December at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market. This year consider giving some of your Xmas feast to the Food Pantry so that those who are in less stable circumstances in our community can have an awesome Christmas meal too! Take your food directly to the pantry or to the Market this Sunday.

Bike Grey Lynn!

Bike Grey Lynn is one of Bike Auckland's BikeBurbs. In 2020 they managed to fit in two educational community events. One after the first lockdown when they discussed what had happened during and after lockdown and a second one on Tactical Urbanism. They started with wine and snacks at the cycle friendly Romulus and Remus, followed by panel discussions with experts. In 2021 Bike Grey Lynn have two large projects being consulted on in the neighbourhood. Ponsonby Rd and Great North Road. They want to focus on becoming a Low Traffic Neighbourhood like this one
