Rear Commodore's Report

by Drew Baldwin, Rear Commodore, MdR

Jim Pike, BC Sundance, with ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus Electric Outboard Motor.

This month we launched the FYC MdR Electric Outboard Pilot Program.

The FYC MdR Harbor Committee has approved the purchase of an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus Electric Outboard Motor, and we have installed it on our Capri 22 Sundance. The electric outboard is currently undergoing trials with the FYC MdR Fleet Captain and select members from the Head Coach Team.

At the past FYC MdR Saturday Open House on December 11, 2021, Sundance Boat Chief Jim Pike and members of the Head Coach Team showed off the new electric outboard motor and encouraged FYC members interested in receiving training to sign up using the form linked below.

FYC MdR Electric Outboard Motor Training Request
https://forms.gle/aEr7hMbqg5gKEvAe9

Once a training program has been developed, we will begin training members—likely starting January 2022. Until then, Sundance will not be available for reservations on Schedule Master.

If you'd like to learn more about our new electric outboard motor, here's the manufacturer's brief handbook.  Or, please feel free to reach out to me or members of the FYC MdR Electric Outboard Committee, whose hard work was instrumental in getting this initiative off the ground (and into the water).

COVID Coordinator's Report

by Yosh Han, Staff COVID Coordinator MdR
Yosh Han is stepping down from her role as Covid Coordinator in MDR. Ken Murray, Fleet Surgeon will continue to supervise Covid Protocols with The Board. Please continue to follow CDC guidelines.

To stay up to date on Covid-19 notices and rules, it's easiest to look at the public health department's website and the stats it's aggregating. For LA County, click here. For Ventura County, click here.  The latest FYC Covid-19 notices and rules for Mdr and CIH can be found at the bottom of our club website at Fairwind.org.

COVID Updates

FYC COVID Notes

by Ken Murray, MdR Fleet  Surgeon
As we go into holidays, I warn you that Covid is not over. As of this writing, there were nearly 6,000 new cases in California yesterday. We have had some "near misses" at Fairwind recently, one involving 16 people.

Get your booster, ASAP. Research out of Israel indicates a remarkable reduction of risk. Make sure you know the vaccine status of those with whom you sail. I recommend asking to see their card, or a picture of it.

Finally, I want to thank Yosh Han, who volunteered as Covid Coordinator for MdR, out of a concern for membership safety. She collected information, and coordinated with management for the first wave of the pandemic. She is stepping down to focus on other things. Please contact her for any further inquiries. Thanks, Yosh!

Ken Murray
MdR Fleet Surgeon
Ken Murray joined Fairwind in 2005, serving as Secretary, Fleet Captain, Fleet Surgeon, and Commodore.  Until 3 years ago, when an illness knocked him down, he was an instructor for all boats in the fleet, and all the usual ASA levels.

The Propeller: One Point Circle Motoring

by Qin Han, BC Mea Ono

Using prop wash/prop walk, a skipper can motor one point circle turn by starting from neutral with a little bit forward momentum. The image is from the free encyclopedia, Wikiwand. Click here to read the full article on Wikiwand (You'll notice their spelling of propellor should be propeller.).

Reverse throttle idle neutral;
Forward throttle idle neutral,

Repeat this unique action,
Let’s complete point circle.

Qin Han joined FYC in February 2021 and volunteered as the ABC on Freequensea right after she became a member. She started sailing five years ago by joining Marina Sunday Sailing Club. She is also a WSA member and participated several sail racing regattas for a year or so. She has a passing to learn sailing.
Fairwind Feature Story
Bob Hamerslough and his crew tackle Tahiti, and they live to tell about it!
Come hear the tale of a fantastic trip that started from a tropical port aboard a lovely ship... or should I say, a 45-foot catamaran.

Join my crew, including a 300-pound Marijuana magnate, as we hop the islands of Raiatea, Taaha and Bora Bora. Marvel at Tahiti's physical beauty, meet some of the islands' esoteric natives and learn of the perils of navigating through the coral reefs of these enchanting atolls. For the full story, click here.
Bob Hamerslough grew up just outside New York and first learned to sail in summer camp. He earned a B.S from Colgate and a Masters in Magazine Management from Syracuse University. Bob founded and edited Empire Sports Magazine and edited Adirondack Life, before returning to The Big Apple to pursue a career in publishing. Bob and his wife, Serena, retired to Ventura in 2015. He is a large boat member at FYC CIH.

The 2021 Baja HaHa

 by Yosh Han, ABC Seaweed

In order from left to right: FYC members Jules Miller (MdR), Yosh Han (MdR), Mark LaFevers (MdR), and Lorelei Woerner (CIH) on the sand at Turtle Bay, Baja, California.

Several Fairwind members from CIH and MDR participated in the 27th annual Baja Haha cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, organized by Richard Spindler and co-sponsored by Latitude 38 magazine. The first leg was >25+ winds to Bahia Tortuga, little wind on the second let to Bahia Santa Maria and steady wind on the final leg to Cabo San Lucas. Over 135+ boats participated with 400+ sailors. As always, the softball game with the local kids was a great success raising over $1K.

Mark LaFevers on Silver Linings, Jeanneau SO 45.2 sailed down from Ventura with CIH members Lorelei Woerner and Mackenzie Sullivan came aboard in Cabo for the leg to LaPaz and Espiritu Santos island. They caught some fish which they served up sashimi style and on the grill for some tacos. Mike McGuire on Water Guy, Beneteau Oceanis 40 is a veteran of 3 Hahas, skippered his first this year and sailed with CIH members Abi Convery, Ken Convery and Kim JonesYosh Han was first mate on Mykonos, Swan 44. This was her second voyage with them. After the Haha, they sailed on to Puerto Vallarta. Jules Miller sailed on Seahorse, Beneteau 49. She's the ABC on Tardis and was in the South Pacific at the start of the pandemic and hopes to get back there to continue her circumnavigation. Kelly Dorsey sailed down on catamaran Arias Song, Lagoon 400. There were several WSA (Women’s Sailing Association) members from MDR, including Commodore Wendy Northrup and local teachers and racers Sunshine Jen, Lara Jacques and Carey Meredith. California Boater Card

by Patricia Nazario

In California, each year a new age group is added to boaters who are required to have a valid card. For 2021, the law requires everyone 40 years old or younger to have a card. By 2025, everybody on the water will be required to have one. Once issued, the card remains valid for life.

Training, Volunteer Sign-Up, Credits, and Guidelines

by Patricia Nazario

MdR Harbor Orientation:

FYC Level-2 ASA Instructor Alex Van Name put together this 10-page document to help people find their way around MdR.

How to Connect to Shore Power:

When returning from sailing, please be mindful of the A/C power cords and do the following:

1) Plug the cord into the boat connector and the power outlet on the dock.
2) Turn the cord counter-clockwise (at both ends) until the cord locks in.
3) Turn the power off at the dock for 5 seconds, and then turn the power back on.
4) Make sure the green dock box light is on. If it's red, the plug is attached incorrectly.

Watch the two-minute tutorial here.

Volunteer Spreadsheet:

In our last Membership Meeting on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, there was some concern about ways to contribute to our community when making a workday Tuesday is impossible. FYC Level-2 ASA Instructor Alex Van Name created this sign-up sheet. Basically, members can post their skills and availability, so that others may reach out if there's a match. This sign-up sheet will remain an active part of our monthly newsletter.

Newsletter Submission Guidelines:

Our newsletter is a safe space for our community to share ideas, thoughts, information, and experiences. The content we generate is intended to inform, inspire and encourage us, all, to become better sailors, and better dial into the lifestyle we so enjoy. Articles should be topical, teach lessons/skills, or keep members up to date on current events. If you've had an amusing experience, or have done something unusual related to sailing, we'd love to share it! Here's how it works.

1) We publish the second Saturday of the month to coincide with FYC Open House
2) Longer articles may be split into sequential parts for brevity.
3) The submission deadline is the end of the month (for the following month's issue).
4) Accompany your story/article with photos/illustrations.
5) Include a 125x125 self-portrait and a 60-word mini-bio.

Please submit only your original photos for the newsletter header and the Fairwind Feature Photo section to: photos@fairwind.org

Please submit story ideas, questions, and/or comments to:
newsletter@fairwind.org

Thank you!
