ASD15 – San Diego Art Prize Winners

Join us this November 5–8 at ART SAN DIEGO for a whirlwind weekend! The four-day contemporary art extravaganza, themed [META.MORPHOSIS]: 100 Years of Evolving Art, will be part of Balboa Park's Centennial Celebration and will feature a dizzying array of fine art, exciting events, stimulating lectures, and artist-spotlight programs.

San Diego Art Prize

One such program is the San Diego Art Prize, a cash prize that spotlights established San Diego artists and emerging artists each season whose outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts merit the recognition. Congratulations to the 2015 San Diego Art Prize recipients, established artists Wendy Maruyama and Roy McMakin, who have chosen Peter Scheidt and Kevin Inman respectively as the emerging artists to mentor and exhibit with at ART SAN DIEGO this November. All four award recipients will also be exhibiting at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, CA, from May 7–June 11, 2016. We'll take a closer look at the emerging artists soon; this week, let's learn more about the prize-winning established artists.

Wendy Maruyama | The Tag Project
Wendy Maruyama / The Tag Project

Wendy Maruyama is an artist and educator whose work moves beyond the boundaries of traditional studio craft and into the realm of social practice. Integrating feminist ideology, zoology, narrative elements, crafts, and glass work into her art, Maruyama's body of work offers a unique perspective with a societal message. She's exhibited all over the U.S., as well as in Tokyo, Seoul, and London, and her work is included in permanent collections around the country and in Tasmania.

Roy McMakin, both an artist and an accomplished designer, combines form and function, furniture and visual art, to produce hybrid objects of clean, sensuous surface with humorous underpinnings. His work often plays with scale and language, inviting both visceral response and conceptual contemplation. McMakin has completed numerous commissions and architectural projects on the west coast, including in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the San Diego International Airport.
