How do you define leadership buy-in? Sometimes this means a simple thumbs-up from senior leadership. But is that enough if we aim to be a high performance organization? How One Project is Making a Dent in One of Healthcare’s
Toughest Problems


At the Institute for healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum in December, 2009, a billboard-sized model of the IHI Improvement Map was erected outside the exhibit hall. The map lists core healthcare processes.  Beside the map was a container of silver pushpins and a container of red pushpins. Summit participants were asked to insert a silver pin into one process they felt they had mastered and a red pin into that which they considered most difficult and problematic. The results, while not scientific, were obvious. Medication reconciliation is, without a doubt, one of healthcare’s toughest problems. At the time I was in the Measure Phase of a Lean Six Sigma DMAIC project leading a team to solve the Medication Reconciliation problem at a hospital in New York. I showed this photo to my team and they replied, “This is not news to us!” As I’m writing this, we are in the final phase of the project and this is the story of how we got there. read more >

Meet Dan Chauncey
Director of Deployment Services

Dan Chauncey, NOVACESDan has been directly involved in the development and application of process improvement methodologies for more than twenty years.  At NOVACES, he provides leadership advisory, implementation planning, executive training, and program management services for the company’s healthcare clients.

Prior to joining NOVACES, Dan served as the Director of Process Improvement & Organizational Development for the University Health System in San Antonio, TX where he implemented a plan that incorporated the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria and utilized Six Sigma as the improvement methodology to help the organization achieve significant improvements in quality.

As the Quality Improvement Manager at Humana Inc., he led a team responsible for all aspects of operational support for a 450-person customer service center.

Dan has served ten years in the U.S. Air Force, holds a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice and Behavioral Science from Wilmington College, an M.A. in Human Resource Development, and an MBA from Webster University.
