Midwinter Convention

The District 39W Midwinter Convention will be held February 21-22 at Courtyard by Marriott in Meridian, Idaho. Special guest speaker is Daniel Marney Elkins, charter member of Bellefonte Lions Club in Delaware and Lions International new club consultant. Other guest speakers include Al Hedstrom, PDG of District 19 C-4 and Global Action Team Leader for the northwestern US, and Lion Grace Zimmerman, Miss Idaho.  The convention theme is "Empowering Youth" and topics will include service for and about youth, empowering youth to serve and lead, and Leo involvement. Of course, there will also be plenty of fun and games, social time, business, elections, food, and networking.

Lions Clubs are requested and encouraged to send at least one representative (although it's more fun with 2 or 10) to the convention. Each club will have 2 minutes on Saturday  to speak about their club projects. A visual presentation would be ideal. Ideas for your 2 minute presentation:
  • What are your projects and what is their impact on your community?
  • What is your signature project?
  • What are you most known for in your community?
  • What recruitment activities have been most successful?
  • What awards or recognition has your club recently received?
  • How do you serve or empower youth?
Let's celebrate our clubs and share what we do!

Clubs are also requested and encouraged to bring a raffle prize or basket. The raffle helps defray the cost of the convention and who doesn't enjoy winning a great prize? Wine and chocolate is always good.

Brush up on your minute-to-win it skills for Friday evening when we'll be joined by area Leos. Wear your best or craziest hat for the Madhatter Contest. Evening hospitality suite will be provided by Meridian Lions Club and vice district governor candidates, Kathy Donahue (1st VDG) and Betty Simpson (2nd VDG).

Registration forms and tentative agenda can be found at this link. In addition, clubs have been mailed paper registration forms.

Coloring Books for the VA Clinic

The VA Medical Center has requested donations of coloring books, activity books, sticker books, kids magazines, and small packages of crayons or colored pencils for Veterans' children to use while at the clinic and to take home. Donations can be dropped off at the Voluntary Service Office, Building 85A which is across from the parking garage. This is an ongoing project for any club that wants to participate. You may also send cash/check to District 39W and your gift will be forwarded to the VA Clinic.

Patriotism Essay Contest

The Annual Patriotism Essay Contest is coming up soon. This is a great opportunity to network within your local schools. This year's contest theme is "How Important Is Patriotism in my Community Today?". The essay contest is open to elementary school students in grades 1-6 within the boundaries of Multiple District 39. Lions introduce the contest into the school, set a deadline for completion (be sure to allow time for judging), and select winning essays to submit to the District contest by March 22, 2020. District contest winners advance to the Multiple District contest. MD winners are invited to Sun Valley to read their essays at the convention in May.

Entries must include the cover sheet and follow the rules listed there. Cover sheets and complete contest information is listed on the 39W website.

Candidates for District Governor and 1st and 2nd District Governor need to submit their intention to run, their qualifications, and their club endorsement to the Elections Chairperson, Sandy Oswald, 30 days in advance of the Midwinter Convention. Information on qualifications can be found in the District Constitution and By-Laws. PDG Sandy can be reached at

Library Reading Glasses

Envision, in conjunction with the Boise Bench Lions Club, has provided reading glasses to the Boise Public Library. Boxes of glasses have been place in the reading areas of all the branches and the main library. If a patron need readers, they can use them and return them, or take them for their personal use. The Library has had a few readers in each location at the reception desk, but now they are much more accessible. The Library staff appreciates the donation and enthusiastically supports it, as a day without reading is a day without sunshine!  - Lion Curt Kelley

Notes from the editor

If you are a club secretary or president, it's your responsibility to share the newsletter with your club-the mailing list does not, unfortunately, include everyone.
If you are not on the mailing list and want to be added, use the subscribe link or contact me directly. Snail mail available on request.
If you have club events, news, photos, speakers, projects to share, please send to me or to your zone chair for publication. Have a flyer? Send that, too. I can't make up enough stuff to fill the newsletter, although I try.
Publication is the 10th; deadline to submit news is flexible, but end of the month is preferred.
Comments, suggestions, complaints-always welcome!
