Can you believe we're almost through whatever month it is, oh fuck it who cares? Me neither! This is such an exciting time to who knows what and get fired up about absolutely nothing, don't you agree? Can't wait to spend some quality time doing whatever with nobody let's go eat more chocolate.

With that said, welcome to The Vegan High Five Issue 16! As always, we hope you are doing as well as can reasonably be expected and we hope you aren't putting too much pressure on yourself to accomplish unreasonable things.

We are doing ok. After a very tumultuous application process that involved some tears and yelling at our soon to be former bank, we found a place to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program and they came through in a fine fashion so we are feeling a HUGE weight has been lifted for a while. We've are also incredibly thankful for all of our customers and friends and fans who are choosing to shop with us. It fills our hearts packing up and shipping out orders to all you lovely people. One million, no, make that ONE BILLION thank you's!

Now let's get to the cute dogs and cookies, shall we? WE SHALL!

A friend sent me this one and I watched it first thing laying in bed with a cup of coffee in my hand. So, I guess, actually, second thing cuz first thing was making coffee. As it always is. As it shall ever be. SO YEAH...second thing this morning I watched this! What a great start to the day! There is another video of his dogs with his announcer voiceover that is equally hilarious. Anybody else out there have two animals that do the stare down like this? Ace and Sassy sometimes play, it's rare, but sometimes they do. Ace will kinda jump around Sassy and she will bark at him and bow down and wag and then they will both freeze and give each other the frozen side eye. The tension builds then they both leap into action again. Animals are so weird! -JOSH

We live in the city, on a busy street. There's a preschool and a grade school down the street, a popular event space across from us, a very popular "instagrammable" building for tourists on the opposite corner. But lately.... it's quiet. The bus goes by, it's empty. The sidewalks, empty. Popular event space? Empty. You get it.

SO - when a masked man (masked in a good way!) strolled down the sidewalk and noticed the pink petals that had snowed down and covered the ground, only to lay there, undisturbed, fluffy and oh so pink... of course he layed down and made a petal angel. Ruby and I watched the whole thing from our window, delighting in his actions. He was not performing for instagram (though I did put him on our story!!) he was simply enjoying a moment, making a "snow angel" perfecting it with his hands, pushing those petals into just the right angel shape. When he finished, he took a picture, and sat down on the stoop. He didn't know we were watching, and I don't think anybody else saw him do it. Ruby and I ran outside, clapping, thanked him for the show, and snapped a few pics. Thank you, oh masked angel man! You made our day! -MICHELLE

Veganized from Bon Appetit Magazine

Here I am again, veganizing Bon Appetit!  You're welcome!

  • 1½ cups assorted raw nuts and seeds
  • ½ cup (60 g) old-fashioned oats
  • 3 Tbsp. aquafaba or water
  • 1 Tbsp. flax meal
  • 4 Tbsp. vegan butter, melted
  • ¼ cup (packed; 50 g) dark brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. (25 g) granulated sugar
  • 1½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ¾ cup assorted dried fruit (cut into ½" pieces if large)
  • ¾ cup chopped bittersweet chocolate bars or chips
  • ½ cup (63 g) all-purpose flour
  • Place racks in upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 350°. Toast nuts and seeds and oats on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing once, until golden brown, 10–12 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl; let cool.
  • Meanwhile, mix flax and aquafaba or water, butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl; let sit until nuts are cool (this will make for a chewier cookie).
  • Add dried fruit and chocolate to nut mixture; toss to combine. Give sugar mixture a good stir, then stir in flour. Mix in nut mixture, smashing it against the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula, until combined and mix-ins are evenly coated in dough. (It will look like too many mix-ins, but dough will come together as it chills.) Cover and chill at least 2 hours and up to 3 days.
  • Reheat oven to 350°. Using a ¼ cup, portion out dough, packing firmly, to make 12-14 cookies. Divide between 2 parchment-lined baking sheets as you go. Using measuring cup or your hand, press cookies into 2½"-diameter disks about ¾" thick; sprinkle with sea salt. Bake cookies, rotating baking sheets top to bottom and front to back once, until golden brown and no longer wet-looking, 11–13 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets.

Long time readers of the High Five will remember we got our garden going at some point, when exactly I can't remember because I'm not entirely sure if time moves forwards or backwards or sideways anymore. BUT! We got our garden going, and here is the update! Looking good, we've got a nice lettuce going, some stuff I started from seed is sprouting (lettuce and spinach) then we've got kale and spinach that I planted from a start. At some point in the near future/past/present/alternate universe we'll have tons of greens to eat! It could be today, it could be 5 years ago, who knows! But it's going to be delicious! If you have never grown a plant and eaten it before, I highly recommend you give it a try. There is something incredibly satisfying about putting a seed or a start into some soil and watching it become something you want to eat. It's very life affirming!

Tell us your plant stories! Email us! -JOSH
