Westside Park making a comeback

Volunteers and sponsors are helping revive and restore Westown Commons Park!

On Saturday, July 27, 50+ volunteers gathered to kick off the Parks Alive program at Westown Commons Park. Neighbors young and old came out to spread mulch, trim bushes, repair and paint benches, and install 2 new grills and a bike rack.Parks Alive

The goal of the Parks Alive program is to increase engagement of residents, sponsors, and park adopters to sustain and improve neighborhood parks.  At Westown Commons, FGRP is working closely with The Other Way Ministries and other west side groups to pilot the program.

Next steps at Westown Commons include additional amenity installation and a youth charrette to help cast a long-term vision for the park that is neighbor-driven.

Special thanks to Kurt and Karl from The Other Way for providing coffee, donuts, and food for the grill out, and the City of Grand Rapids for their ongoing partnership around this program.  Earlier this year, the City of Grand Rapids was awarded a 15k grant  from Sprite to resurface the basketball court at the park.

For more information on how you can activate your park with the Parks Alive program, contact our Project Coordinator, Kyle at 259-0111 or

Thank You!
