|Wild Earth Newsletter
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2012, I hope that you have had an enjoyable summer. At the Wild Earth office we have been busy finalising some of our exciting upcoming expeditions including Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. With the occasional earthquake in Christchurch there is never a dull moment in the Garden City!
Introducing the MV Oceanic Discoverer
The MV Oceanic Discoverer is going to be our expedition vessel for both the Papua New Guinea and Melanesia Expeditions that we have planned for the upcoming year. I have just been aboard the ship on an expedition voyage around the New Zealand coast and it has been a great opportunity to get to know the ship a little better – as well as visiting places like Fiordland.
The Oceanic Discoverer was built in Australia in 2005 and sails today with an Australian captain and crew aboard, she is 63 meters long and is just under 1800 tons gross weight. This makes her similar in size to the “Spirit of Enderby” that you may be familiar with from expeditions with Heritage Expeditions. The ship is fitted with stabilizers and this provides a very comfortable ride particularly in beam seas. Inside the ship is light airy and modern with large picture windows in most cabins and beautiful floor to ceiling windows in the Dining Room and Bar/Lounge. With air conditioning throughout the vessel she is ideal for the warmer climes of the tropical Pacific.
For expedition landings the Oceanic Discoverer has both zodiacs for reaching those small out of the way destinations and also the custom designed “Xplorer” landing craft which is launched from the stern of the ship an can accommodate all aboard at once making for quick and easy transfers from ship to shore.

Papua New Guinea Expedition
Mysterious Papua New Guinea is somewhere which has been on our radar for a number of years and finally later this year Aaron Russ will be leading an expedition to this remarkable and little visited part of the world. Departing October 10th 2012 aboard the Oceanic Discoverer we will sail northwards from Cairns, Australia with visits to such world renowned destinations as the Trobiand Islands, Rabaul and the mighty Sepik River before ending in Rabaul. Each day promises to bring new and exciting adventures as we discover the culture, wildlife and landscapes of Papua New Guinea. Leave the modern world behind and join us as we immerse ourselves in one of the world’s undiscovered gems.
This voyage is filling quickly so we recommend you act quickly to secure your place on what promises to be the expedition of a lifetime!

Explore Melanesia – Calling All Adventurers
Wild Earth in conjunction with the team at Explore Medical have been working to bring you an expedition with a difference, a unique combination of adventure discovery and cultural interaction with the purpose of contributing to the communities that we visit along the way. We have planned an expedition voyage that will take us from New Caledonia to Papua New Guinea through the many islands of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The plan calls for visits to sights of natural and cultural significance such as the active volcano of Tanna and the land diving of Pentecost in Vanuatu, remote Makira in the Solomon Islands and enigmatic Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. Enroute there will be opportunities to explore by land and sea with diving, snorkeling, hiking and even surfing options.
But what we are most proud of and excited about are the plans to hold clinics in remote villages and towns, these will be all encompassing visits where expedition participants contribute their expertise and skills. For more details contact Aaron today!
Trip Photos - New Zealand's Natural Wonders
Last month I joined the MV Oceanic Discoverer on an expedition voyage from Milford Sound to Auckland around the New Zealand coast. Sailing first through spectacular Fiordland we reached our southern most point at Stewart Island before sailing northwards along the east coasts of the South and North Islands. The weather was generally very favourable and we were treated to some great wildlife encounters.

Antarctica & South Georgia – Special Spring Voyage
Considered by many to be one of the greatest spectacles on earth, South Georgia really does have it all – spectacular snow-capped peaks and wildlife in untold abundance, not to mention the history of Shackleton and the whalers! No matter what time of the year you visit South Georgia is a place that will never be forgotten and we certainly rate it as one of our favourite destinations, I have been fortunate enough to have visited over thirty times and never cease to be astounded. Next spring we have a very special voyage that is visiting South Georgia early November, this is a little earlier than is normally possible but it promises to deliver spectacular snow covered landscapes, beaches thronging with Elephant Seals at the height of the breeding season and all of this is combined with wildlife rich Falkland Islands and beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula.
