In putting this edition of the newsletter together I was reminded of the old saying “time flies when you’re having fun”. It’s difficult to believe that we are coming towards the end of the 2010 trading period as it seems like only “yesterday” that my business partner Martin Richards & I acquired Optimec. We have certainly been busy!

We’ve been pleased to have former owner Steve Wheeler acting as a consultant for us while we get “closer” to this fascinating industry. In fact Steve has just returned from an overseas trip taking in the Hong Kong Optical Show. As usual it proved to be a great opportunity to meet Optimec customers and friends old & new.

The importance of meeting customers first hand has not been lost on Martin & I and we are pleased to announce that we are already making plans to attend the 2011 EFCLIN Congress from the 12th-14th May in Barcelona, Spain. It’s already clear to us that if you could only attend one show in the annual calendar then EFCLIN should be the one. See you there?

Service Exchange, It’s So Easy!

Optimec instruments like the JCF really earn their keep in contact lens laboratories. In fact, some instruments lead a pretty hard life with the inevitable consequences as far as “wear & tear” is concerned. It’s only then that Lab owners become aware of a certain dilemma. An important piece of equipment like the JCF, in constant use, needs repair – what do you do? Simple. Or at least it is now that we have introduced the loan cell scheme. 98% of all JCF repairs relate in some way to the cell. If yours needs a little “TLC” from time to time, just let us know. We’ll send you one of our loan cells for you to use whilst we repair yours. Once it’s done, we just swap them back. Simple.

Old Instrument – New Specification?

The popularity of the now very old Zeiss Dokumator instruments continues to amaze us. However, they are deservedly popular as a result their solid construction and simple original design. Quite simply, they were built to last. However, times change as do specifications & instrument performance requirements. Over the last year we have adapted & upgraded many original Zeiss instruments for our customers. Larger field of view? Filters? Different magnification? No problem. As optical engineers this is the kind of thing we do all the time – so maybe we can do it for you?

JCF & TC20i – The Right Combination

Some things were just meant to go together. Some things end up together by accident. Others, like the JCF and TC20i combination of instruments are together by design. It seems only natural that having designed what is widely accepted as the definitive instrument for measuring key soft lens parameters, the JCF, we should want to improve it further still. The natural improvement was to introduce temperature control to enhance both consistency and accuracy of measurement, in short the TC20i. There’s never been a better time to upgrade or increase the capacity of your soft lens measurement. JCF & TC20i is the best way to achieve that.

Diary Date – EFCLIN Congress, 12th-14th May 2011

There are a few dates in our trade diary that can be regarded as essential. The annual EFCLIN Congress is one of them. Next years event sees a return to Barcelona in Spain, scene of one of the most successful congresses ever in 2003. Early indications are that 2011 is set to be a record breaker. If you are a potential delegate, you should make a note in your diary now. If you are a potential exhibitor then space is already being booked. You can find all the information you need at and click on the congress button. In case you were wondering, Optimec will be in Barcelona complete with a full range of instruments including JCF, TC20i, Chiltern & SAG.
