NASA and the Houston Cinema Arts Film Festival gave filmmakers footage from the space program and asked them to get creative. The result is a series of out-of-this-world shorts.

The Seventh Fire

Today (Saturday) at 9:00 p.m. at the Historic Ashland Armory

Described by the Hollywood Reporter as “fascinating and important” this documentary (that feels like a feature) follows the life of a gang leader on a remote reservation in Minnesota and his 17-year-ol protégé. A haunting and visually arresting film that explores life on the reservation today.

LAUNCH Regional Student Film Competition Awards

at 10:10 a.m. Ashland Street Cinemas - IN RUSH
Celebrate our local emerging talents. Students from kindergarteners to college undergraduates who submitted winning films will receive their awards and take questions about their work and process.
 

Sake Tasting

Sample sake from the 144-year-old brewery featured in the documentary The Birth of Sake. Kobe Modern Japanese Cuisine will provide sushi tastings. Please note this event is open only to persons 21 years or older. There is limited quantities, so this will be first come, first serve. Today (Saturday) from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Ashland Wine Cellar, 38 Lithia Way, Ashland.

The San Francisco animator/artist brings his show “Stopping the Motion, an Expanded Cinema Performance to the theater at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Plenty of parking. Today (Saturday) at 1:00 p.m. for children and 7:00 p.m. for adults. Tickets $15 for adults and $10 for students. Buy tickets online or at the door (if available).

A Conversation With Celia Rowlson-Hall 
3:40 p.m. Today (Saturday) at the Varsity Theatre

Choreographer/filmmaker Celia Rowlson-Hall, who choreographs for HBO’s Girls and Vogue.com, will show short videos and talk about the links she sees between movement and film. (Rowlson-Hall is the director of the feature film MA, which screens at AIFF2016, and she will be presented with the Tangerine Award for emerging women directors.) Ticket required.
