Tests demonstrate significant W2S benefits

'Time to failure’ rates increase up to 154%

Techenomics continues to prove the benefits of using NanoLub tungsten disulphide (W2S) additives with new tests showing significant increases in ‘time to failure’ of engine oils. Techenomics believes that the use of W2S additives will also result in an increase in component life, resulting in considerable financial benefits to operators.

The W2S additives reduce operating temperatures and help prevent wear of metal components, ensuring oil performs better, lasts longer and is gentler to the environment through a reduction in emissions.

The Timken tests at one of Techenomics’ ISO accredited laboratories on three 15W40 engine oils supplied by customers in differing operating situations showed increases in time to failure of up to 154%.

With each standard engine oil, testing showed the effects of dosing the oil with increasing amounts of nano-sized W2S additives. The results were compared to the oil’s performance with no additives.

At a W2S dosage rate of 5% the Shell Rimula 15w40 demonstrated maximum increase in time to failure of 149%, the Meditrans 15W/40 from one site was a maximum 140% and from another site was 89%. At dosage rates of 3% the increase in time to failure was 77%, 85% and 34% respectively.

Techenomics’ CEO Chris Adsett says the tests indicate that significant time to failure improvements can be achieved with the addition of NanoLub additives. “There is every reason to believe that this will also translate to similar increases in component life, providing great financial benefits to operators of engines and equipment.”

Further tests will be carried out by Techenomics to examine more common heavy engine oils, gear oils and other oils supplied by customers. Chris Adsett says the company has an extensive library of lubricating oils supplied by customers and the results will be very comprehensive when the testing program is complete.
