Changes to Arizona Charitable Tax Credit could mean double the donations for Qualifying Charitable Organizations.

Governor Ducey has signed SB 1216 which increases the credit Arizona taxpayers can claim for cash donations to Qualified Charitable Organizations. The maximum allowable amount is increasing from $200 for a single individual and $400 for a married couple filing jointly to $400 for an individual and $800 for a couple.

It's also expected that SB 1217 will be passed and extend the deadline for contributions to April 15. The bill stipulates that a contribution for which a credit is claimed, and that is made on or before April 15, may be applied to either the current or preceding taxable year. SB 1217 is currently with the Governor, awaiting his signature.

What is a
"Qualifying Charitable Organization"?

A nonprofit has to apply for qualifying status and meet all of the requirements of the law to be considered for qualifying status. Once approved, the organization is added to the official list of qualified organizations.

What are the requirements?

It's a real mouthful, but as stated on the Arizona Department of Revenue website, "A Qualifying Charitable Organization is a charity that is a 501(c)(3) or a community action agency that receives community services block grant program monies that spends at least 50% of its budget on services to Arizona residents who either receive temporary assistance for needy families (TANF) benefits, are low income residents whose household income is less than 150% of the federal poverty level, or are children who have a chronic illness or physical disability and shows that the charity plans to continue spending at least 50% of its budget on services to those described above."
