Robin Hanson
Program Manager - AmeriCorps*VISTA
I grew up in rural Arizona, and in 1964, the very first year of the VISTA program, my family hosted two VISTA members for their year of service. Coming full circle to managing a VISTA team is an honor and privilege. The AmeriCorps VISTA program through the Alliance provides an opportunity for individuals to live and work in poverty for a year, building capacity in their nonprofit, education, and government programs, in both rural Arizona and at statewide organizations. So while I keep an anxious eye on a federal budget process that could threaten AmeriCorps programs nationwide, I’m also eager to continue working with an outstanding group of VISTAs right here in Arizona.

President Donald Trump’s first federal budget proposes deep cuts in discretionary spending to many departments that impact nonprofits. The budget proposes defunding 18 agencies, including the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Legal Services Corporation, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment of the Arts, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Most of the cuts had been expected in recent weeks. The Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program, which provides funds to local food banks and Meals On Wheels, would be eliminated along with funding for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI). Intel is committed to community-based partnerships. The Skills-based Mentoring Program is a means for local organizations to benefit from Intel’s resources, skills, & experience. After an initial vetting to determine an Intel employee’s specific skillset, experience, and certifications a match is made with a participating organization. Mentors are well versed in the development of innovative solutions to common problems and in sharing tools for finding new ways to approach and solve organizational challenges. [more]
