Racing Against Gun Violence

One of the reasons we launched our non-profit organization, New Community Outreach (NCO), last year was to bring resources from outside our immediate community into the community for the good of our neighbors. It's been amazing to see people from outside the city - and around the country - give generously to our vision of thriving communities at the intersection of trauma and hope.

Last week I took two hours to join the 25 Dyett High School students in our NCO program on a trolley tour of the neighborhood. (See the most recent NCO newsletter for photos from the tour.) As we visited significant sites and listened to our tour guide explain the many important events that have taken place in Bronzeville, I was struck by the community the students have developed with each other during this school year. Their care for each other - and for Markeyta Boone, our Executive Director, and Pete Blodgett, her assistant at Dyett - was palpable.

This is our third year of programming at Dyett and this summer, for the first time, we're offering part-time employment and mentoring for a smaller group of students. It's been amazing to see the rapid growth of our small and faithful efforts!

Back to bringing in outside resources for the good of our community. On June 6 many of us will be running the Strides for Peace Race Against Gun Violence. After registering for the race, we are each able to invite friends and family members to make a donation to our personal Strides for Peace page. Each donation goes directly to NCO!

We are over a quarter of the way to our goal of raising $20,000. It's an ambitious amount to raise for a young organization, but it's one of the reasons we started NCO. And we need your help! If New Community is your church home, please consider registering for the race today. You can run, walk, or just cheer from a distance. However you choose to support will make a tangible difference in the lives of the kids and youth we're called to serve.

- Pastor David

PS We have 10 free registrations for the race. Email Krystle Kim for more info.

Community Prayer Requests

1) Jackie Robinson Elementary School: Please continue to pray for the school as it transitions to a new principal. Pray as well for our upcoming 5th Sunday Service day on June 30th and the Back-to-School Fair on August 24th.

2) Summer Safety: With the weather finally warming up we want to pray for safety in our neighborhoods.

3) Facility: As we continue to discern a long-term facility for the church, we need wisdom about what kind of a building will best fit the mission and identity God has given us.

Faith & Race Workshop

This year's Faith & Race Workshop focused on the life and legacy of one of Bronzeville's most famous residents, Ida B. Wells. Dennis Bourne and his team once again created a significant opportunity for us to have a common experience around topics and realities which impact each of us.
Your generosity helps our ministry flourish. Please see this fact sheet to learn more about how to give or visit our website to give online. Thank you!
